I suspect I'm being whooshed here - but what the hell, I'll blunder in anyway.
The 1914-18 conflict has been known as the Great War ever since it was given that title during the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Versailles. If an author sets a novel in the period of the war years and just after, they are bound to refer to it as the Great War simply in the interest of authenticity.
