Free Science Fiction / Fantasy Books from Baen

The publisher Baen has a refreshing stance on piracy. They obviously don't condone it, but rather than trying to punish those who download illegally they recognise that free copies of books can generate a lot more interest, via word of mouth, reviews and general recognition, in authors' subsequent books.

As such they set up the Baen Free Library - the description of it's goals and reasoning are long, but a good read for an insight into the publisher's thoughts.

Basically, authors with Baen are asked if they wish to contribute one or more of their books for free (as in zero cost and zero DRM) download. Often it will be books from the early part of a series in order to gain interest in the set and so get momentum on sales.

The site isn't brilliantly user friendly, but use the links on the left to see book Series (ones marked 'in the library' are available free), and then the links for Authors and Books to find one you want. When you are on the book page select to download it (Mobi/Kindle format) and transfer it to your Kindle.

Alternatively use the 'Email book to my Kindle' link. You need to authorise their email address through you Manage My Kindle section on the Amazon site, but this method works even with your free.kindle.com address - I just successfully received both of Lois McMaster Bujold's free books as I've already read the first and enjoyed it.

Is anyone else familiar with any other authors on the list? Recommendations?

I'm a complete fantasy nut, but I have to say I don't recognise any of the authors. That said, I do like the look of some of the books.

At the rate I'm going, I shall be reading free books from now until doomsday - I've literaly hundreds of books I want to read.

Thanks for the great link, a real find Thumbs Up

This one was found while reading some random comments on a story in The Register of all places.

My wife also a bit of a fantasy nut and did recognise some of the names, so I downloaded a load of books by David Weber, Holly Lisle, Harry Turtledove and Mercedes Lackey
