Hi Blimp & Gilly

Welcome to the forum

The screen isn't using any power except when it changes state, so turning off doesn't matter and would maybe use more power to blank the screen.

To turn off you slide the power switch and hold it in the switch position for about 5 seconds, at the point the screen will turn off and you can let go of the switch.

you can turn off the wireless to conserve some power when your not using it. Press HOME then MENU and select the opinion Turn Wireless OFF

Welcome Blimp!

I used to switch mine off but don't now after seeing some of the posts here saying as above. There may be a positive value in leaving it on after down loading a new book as the Kindle "indexes" new books so it can search them very quickly and this takes some time. The only time people here suggest switching it off is going though airport security and during take off and landing.

Happy kindling - I've enjoyed mine so much in nearly 4 months!

I am still finding my way around it, trial and error, but so far its sort of OK, I am glad I found this forum so I can ask my zillions of questions. One question have I got to register it with Amazon?

Welcome to the Forum Blimp.

Yes, you will need to register your Kindle with Amazon so that you can download your books.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like, we will never - well almost never, take the mickey - we are a nice bunch of people! Wink

Have a look on the FAQ section, it may help you with some of your initial questions as well.

I don't think it worth bot registering with Amazon, but I guess you could choose not to but then you wouldn't be able to obtain books from Amazon and may also have issues if you ever needed to use your warranty. With an un-regsitered kindle I think you can still load books from other sources such as Project Gutenberg, Smashwords etc.
