RE: Kindle FAQ October 2010

How DO you turn off a Kindle?

The switch is supposed to work;
Quick flick = sleep
Hold for 7 seconds = off
Hold for 20 seconds plus = restart

"off" does give a white screen, but the device wakes as fast from there as from sleep, which leads me to believe that it's just a "sleep with a white screen" setting.

A wake from a real off should surely take at least as long as a restart and show the start-up screens while it's doing it.

Any BMs out there who can shed light on this?

Hi Swinton and welcome to KUF Hello

It's a real pain, isn't it, but I don't think there is a way of bookmarking where you have got to in the search. It means I never get beyond certain pages as I run out of time/patience. Unless someone knows differently...?

RE: Kindle FAQ October 2010

Hi There,
Haven't got a Kindle yet (but I'm hoping for one for my birhday - I've dropped enough hints) but I have been reading books on my phone using the Mobile Kindle app,. so I have quite a few books already there, but not all of them from Amazon. So will I be able to access these on the Kindle? What about getting other non-Amazon books on it in the future - will Amazon manage them all, synching and archiving?

Thanks for all you info so far

Hi HellsBells and welcome to the Forum. I hope you get your Kindle!

Books bought from Amazon will download directly to the Kindle if you choose that option when you download. Books from other sources will need to be drag/dropped from your computer to the Kindle using the USB lead that comes with it, a simple procedure. They obviously won't be in the Amazon archive, so suggest you don't delete them from your computer after downloading to Kindle. Make sure the books you get from other sources are Kindle compatible.

RE: Kindle FAQ October 2010

Thanks for the quick reply Susanne. It' good to know I will be able to keep them all. I'm sure the drag&drop advice will be more obvious when (if? no - definitely when) I get my new toy. Perhaps I should wait to get it before I start planning (only my birthday is coming up very soon....... Clapping hands).

When is your birthday? You must let us know when (not if) you get it! Kindle Smile

(29 Sep 2010 06:16 PM)Lou Wrote:  Q. Can I play Games on my Kindle?

At present, UK Kindle owners have one game – Minesweeper – that they can play on their Kindle. This is accessed by pressing Shift, Alt and M. Two games were available to US Kindle users, but because of a dictionary problem, they have yet to come to the UK. It is likely that games will be made available to UK users in the future.

May I suggest an update/edit in the first post?

I'm sure you know this already, but our UK Kindle has TWO games.....

Minesweeper is accessed by holding down “SHIFT + ALT + M” as you say.
Once in that game, by pressing “G”, a further game called GoMoku can be accessed
GoMoku is a strategy board game otherwise known as Five in a Row.

If you want to get back to Minesweeper from GoMoku just press “M”.
