Sharpening the Pencil (Essays on Writing)

Couple of nice Amazon reviews for Sharpening the Pencil: Essays on Writing, Motivation and Enjoying Your Life:

Sharpening the Pencil

"If you have had trouble with motivation and/or writing in the past, Sharpening the Pencil by Bryan Cohen is a great resource to help you pick up the pencil and get started on that project you've been slacking on. Not much of a writer but looking for a creative boost? These essays are more than just helping you write but will also help you stay motivated and excited about life. This book is well written and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great motivational read!"
Jamie, Amazon Reviewer

"Bryan's writing is so relatable. He is not afraid to tackle very big issues for so many of us a very effortless way with lots of humor. A lot of the book deals with common limitations we set up for ourselves out of fear and the many crutches we use to get us through the day. I really appreciate a good writer like Bryan Cohen who is able to make me laugh while questioning my daily habits and routines. Reading this book helped me figure out a little more about what beliefs are mine and which ones are just culturally imposed (things like drinking coffee every day, eating meat and drinking). This book reassured me that I should keep questioning my habits to become a better, more well rounded person. I really loved how Bryan described his experiences breaking some of these habits so you were able to see exactly what he went through. This paves the way to try the experiment for yourself. This is a must read for anyone young or old, who wants to challenge their thinking patterns in a very fun way."

RE: Sharpening the Pencil (Essays on Writing)

Here are a few more reviews for Sharpening the Pencil: Essays on Writing, Motivation and Enjoying Your Life:

Sharpening the Pencil

"Sharpening the pencil was a great read, full of practical and inventive ways to kick start your goals. The personal examples the author used really helped me relate to the ideas and feel like they were steps I could actually take to motivate myself. It is also very easy to understand all of the concepts in the book as they are explained in a simple but comprehensive way. The best part, however, is that I feel more empowered to enact changes in my life and with the examples to refer to, I'm excited to explore these new motivational techniques."
Ben, Amazon Reviewer

"If you aren't looking for a friend to guide you through building your creative capacity, don't read Sharpening the Pencil. Part personal development, part attitude adjustment, part writing lifestyle how-to, Cohen's latest volume reads like a refreshing chat with an old friend. While geared toward writers, the compilation of some of Cohen's online articles and new material provides the right motivational kick in the pants for the creator/artist of any craft. This author really knows what he's talked about, because he's been there. He shares not only his successes and failures in this book, but the impetus behind the efforts. You'll alternately laugh at his zany stories, scratch your head at his occasional oddness, and find yourself remembering a similar story from your own past. He is intentionally accessible and supportive while motivating you, offering an encouraging shove to a better life. Loaded with insight, full of useful, practical ideas, and friendlier than any other personal development expert I've come across, this book is worth reading, highlighting, and bookmarking - and taken seriously."

RE: Sharpening the Pencil (Essays on Writing)

Here's another positive review for Sharpening the Pencil: Essays on Writing, Motivation and Enjoying Your Life:

Sharpening the Pencil

"Sharpening the Pencil by Bryan Cohen is an accessible and encouraging writing tool, no matter what stage in the writing process in which you find yourself. I was a somewhat discouraged playwright, but this gem made me sit up and think "Why am I giving negative thoughts more power than positive ones?" Just having STP beside me at my desk made me feel more secure in the project that I was undertaking. I'd write a little, run into a road block, and then consult this creative compass to find a way around that road block, and then continue writing on my merry way. It's not just about bringing out the writer inside us, it's about bringing out the most well-rounded, healthiest, happiest PERSON inside us. It's about reconciling our rational brains with our creative brains. STP seems to stem from a new philosophy that misery DOESN'T lead to good art, but that the more joyful you are, the better artist you are. I have the feeling that Sharpening the Pencil is going to be a permanent roommate to my computer in my briefcase, and that I will be a consistent visitor to both inhabitants."
