What I Read

RE: Bookclub: Discussion of You've Gone Too Far This Time, Sir!

I'll go first, since I nominated it.

From the start of the book I was armchair cycling with the author. I think he described things so well, it really was like being with him - but without the pain and discomfort and need for toilets Confused

I loved that he talked himself into doing it and actually stuck by it to do the trip, when he could easily have backed out.
He did meet some dodgy characters along the way, but I was pleasantly surprised on just how nice everyone he came across was. I think being British and only knowing of life in Britain, we (the royal we?) seem to think of foreigners as not as "advanced" - if that is the right word - as us. Bbut from this story, we could certainly learn a few lessons on kindliness and generocity. Would we take a strange cyclist into our home to share a cup of tea? Probably not.

One thing that I wondered about was him meeting the same travellers along the way, but since I've never travelled like that I wouldn't know what the odds were.
I'd watched Ice Road Truckers Deadliest Roads when some of them went to India so could picture some of the scariest roads he was cycling on. Screwloose

I really enjoyed reading Danny Bent's story, it was uplifting, funny and a joy to read.

What I Read

RE: Bookclub: Discussion of You've Gone Too Far This Time, Sir!

I really enjoyed this book. The author's enthusiam and determination to achieve his goal came across really well.

His description of his erxperiences and the places he visited brought it all to life.

Photos of some of his experiences would have been an improvement (but wouldn't have worked on a Kindle). I think it would have been helpful if the book had been written in more of a diary form to get a better grasp of the timeline.

RE: Bookclub: Discussion of You've Gone Too Far This Time, Sir!

this book was a really enjoyable read, from the first page i found it really easy to relate to Danny Bent and his adventure,
the idea to ride to India was mind boggling, the effort he put in was nothing short of mind blowing, as joo mentioned in a previous post i felt like i actually was there pedalling along with him,
the beauty and the different cultures of the countries he rode through really shone through in his writing style,
on his journey he met some very interesting and diverse characters, how the hell he made it still baffles me, this book was a revelation for me as to how a normal man can complete the virtually impossible great effort Danny and an excellent book,
oh and since reading this book it has influenced me to learn to play the ukulele and i am enjoying it too thanx Danny

Hi Guys, Danny here!!

Joo thanks so much for nominating my book - I loved reading your reviews.

It was such an amazing experience and I think most readers are shocked by how nice everyone is. My parents thought I was going to be executed on TV initially but now plan to travel to all these amazing and wonderful places themselves!! : )

I'd have loved to put my photo's in the book but i think for a small time publishing company it was going to be too expensive - we're doing a reprint as we speak and it'll at least have a map in!! : ) You can see some pics at http://www.dannybent.com - just click on the big colourful ball to see my picasa pics.

Massive hugs to one and all,

Dannyx

What I Read

RE: Bookclub: Discussion of You've Gone Too Far This Time, Sir!

I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It made me realise that we have so much here in Britain, and yet so little as well. As joo says, how many people would have been so keen to take someone in, feed them and give them a bed for the night in this country? Sometimes the developed world has lost so much basic human kindness, it goes beyond belief.

Some of the passages and events had me laughing out loud and others were really touching. All in all a brilliant read, but I too would have liked a few photos or a map to show what was going on in a bit more detail. I have it in other Kindle books, so it is possible to do. I can just imagine the children in the class following the adventures and learning so much about other cultures. Smile

I started reading this last night and quickly fell in love with the story.

I will return with a review when I've finished. I don't think I'll be gone long!

I enjoyed this book too - another book I initially thought would not be my type of book - but I was proved wrong - again - isn't it great how we now pick up books that we would never have taken a look at before. It was easy to read and full of interesting experiences that kept me reading.

Thank you Danny for coming on this thread - it's always great to hear from the author, it gives the reading experience an added dimension. I'll have a look on your blog. Smile

What I Read

RE: Bookclub: Discussion of You've Gone Too Far This Time, Sir!

Finally managed to read this - no reflection on the author/book, just ran out of time in June (and now am behind for July!) However, I did enjoy it, despite my initial misgivings - thinking it was a "boys own" type of book - and can only have admiration for someone who puts himself through such trials for such a good cause! It certainly made me appreciate having a hot shower on tap (no pun intended) and a comfy and safe bed (both of which are in short supply at the moment as we have decorators in!) let alone all the other day to day things we take for granted

One small point - someone ought to do a bit more proofreading - there were a few incorrect words that wouldn't be picked up by spellchecker - steal for steel, border for boarder for instance.

It certainly wasnt something I would have picked up myself - so thanks once again to the KBC for selecting it!
