Thank you!
I loved this bit:

"I keep to this routine every day without variation. The repetition itself becomes the important thing; it’s a form of mesmerism. I mesmerize myself to reach a deeper state of mind."

I love art forms in which repetition brings about that effect - it's what the killings do in 2666, what tthe falling house does in Steve McQueen's Deadpan - you go beyond boredom to some kind of transcendence. Fascinating to hear a writer referring to that phenomenon in relation to life as well as art.
Author of thriller The Company of Fellows, and literary novel Songs from the Other Side of the Wall .

RE: Hey, Mr Wind-up Bird, Is there a Murakami thread here?

Murakami's 1Q84 was briefly discussed in BBC2's The Culture Show - episode 13, mostly in the context of a critical appraisal of Orwell's 1984. As of today there are 4 more days during which the episode will still be available on iplayer.

I have just downloaded the free 1Q84: Sampler from Amazon and like what I'm reading. I'm curious though, I wasn't expecting, perhaps naively so, to have elements of Japanese culture explained so lucidly to me. I'm fascinated by the culture and country and intend to learn some of the language next year. My question to any fellow KUforum members reading this is: which of his books would you recommend to learn something of, or gain an insight into contemporary Japanese culture? I'm quite a novice in terms of his work, and would welcome any further pointers.

Thanks all,
Rek

I love Murakami's work. I don't need to think twice about purchasing his novels. And I agree with you Anne. I wish I could read his stuff on the Kindle.

We could always scan the pages and convert it to PDF then .mobi format. But that could take days on end to convert my Murakami collection.
