Send text file to very old 2007 keyboard Kindle

I am trying to send a simple document to my very old Kindle. Plain text, .doc .rtf anything will do. After a long phone call the Amazon people have not been able to help me. Can anyone who has actually done this help please? I have tried many different file types to no avail. Every time the file does arrive on the device but is greyed out so I cannot acces it.

I have previously been successful in sending pdf files to my old kindle keyboard. I seem to remember having to email them to my kindle. My kindle is on charge right now so I will try again tomorrow and let you know if that method still works.
