Hi Stan,

First step would be to try holding the slider for around 40 seconds or so instead of 15.

Lou, sorry to raise a new and unrelated query by piggy-backing onto this reply to a different topic but I'm finding KUF a little frustrating and couldn't find another way into the Forum (although I'm sure its staring me in the face) - I seem to be breaking some rule.

My new query is that whilst sending my own documents to Kindle via an email is easy and suuccessful, sending them from my computer via the USB cable using drag and drop is not successful. I can see all the documents on Kindle from my computer using Explorer but they do not appear on the Kindle Home Page as would an emailed document and yet there seems no obvious route to get at them. Same with music - the music plays OK but you can't see a list in a folder to select - apparently the files just play in the order they were transferred .

How do I get to see all my transferred documents ? Can they be made to come up on the Home Page or am I missing something. In Explorer I can see several folders on Kindle and I've tried putting my files in the Music Folder or the Documents Folder or the Active Content Folder but still no joy.

Stan, I'm going to try to answer your questions, since I happened to read your post before someone has posted an answer.
Regarding the sending of documents via email working, when drag and drop doesn't seem to - sending via email will allow amazon to convert the documents to a kindle-friendly format, whereas drag-and-drop will not.
You won't be able to "see" your files/folders as the kindle software is not designed to include a file explorer like windows has. It will only display them for you to read, if they are in the correct format to be displayed on the Kindle. It is a very streamlined device - there's not really a need for you to be able to view files or manipulate them.

Hope this helps answer your questions.

Ainslie

Thanks Ainslie.

I think I understand - to get personal content onto my kindle in the correct format it has to enter the kindle system via an email so it can be re-formatted into a kindle friendly format. So the next question is - so what can be usefully sent to kindle via the USB cable (music, but what else ?)
Regards

Good grief - the blank screen freeze thing just happened to me. Sad So came here via pc and followed the instructions to hold the slider for 40 seconds. Had to do it twice but it finally worked - produced the original Kindle startup screen with the person reading under the tree. Then a progress bar that ran so sloooooow but eventually bingo and back in business a bit slow but now running fine. Can only agree with Sezo and Matt about the sheer terror I went though for about 15 minutes, especially as as I have only had my Kindle for about 5 weeks and I'd just got up to speed with it. Thanks Lou for the advice on fixing the problem.

Funny thing was my Kindle "fainted" while I was trying to connect to the forum via the so helpful News Blogs and Kindle Resources. Huh

Hi Stan

I'm very much the newbie here but can I give a major plug for calibre - which is in the Tools and Users Forum. I've not had time to read that yet, so don't know what the general view is here. Calibre will enable you to move industrial quantities of stuff via USB and convert most formats to .mobi format where needed including your personal stuff (e.g Word documents) . Also calibre does an unbelievably stunning render of the BBC news which knocked my socks off when I set it up yesterday. More of that another time as I am only here in emergency mode - see above.

StanH,

You can send anything you like and the mass storage memory in the Kindle will hold it, but unless the files are in a format readable by kindle, you won't be able to do anything with them.

I second that recommendation for Calibre, it is excellent free software which really enhances your management of Kindle content.
