Pass on your ebook?

If I buy a paper book, I can let my friends read it (or pass it on when I am done). Can this be done with ebooks?

Not that I am aware but stand to be corrected.

Amazon sell a paperback from a £5+ - You buy it and it can be passed from pillar to post ending up in a charity shop.

You buy a Kindle book for say 90p and so do many others..... now you can see why Amazon are considering giving away the next generation with a minimum spend deposit.

What I would like to see is Libraries adding cheap or free books that run out of reading time - say 30 days for 10p a loan

RE: Pass on your ebook?

Hi Rob,

Yes, Carryonvending is correct for Kindle books with the .AZW file extension. These are sourced from Amazon and are linked to your particular Kindle (or Kindle application on your PC, Mac, iPhone etc)

If you pass-on to another person's kindle it will show up in the list however when they try to read it they will get a message saying that this file is not registered to their Kindle and suggests that they buy the book from the Amazon store (or some such words)

But you are not restricted to Amazon Kindle books on your Kindle …. There is a whole world out there of unrestricted ebook files (in various formats) that your Kindle will either read in native format or that you can convert (via software) to be able to be read on your kindle. For Example check out Project Gutenberg as just one example. The world is your lobster, as they say.

What you can do is share Kindle's. Eventually when everyone has a Kindle we can just swap them the same way we swap books.

I'm not sure I would ever do that, the Kindle is registered to your account, and with your kindle in their hands there would be nothing to stop the recipient running up a nice bill on your account.

Ah, I am looking to the bright new future when 'Kindles' come free with books.
When paperbacks and dead tree books are looked upon as some thing as esoteric as Vellum scrolls.

Soon, you might be able to loan your ebooks for a couple of weeks.

I think the US system allows them to lend a book for 2 weeks, but this can only be done once per book.
