If you like free eBooks, why not help out...?

I am a great Fre-eBooker (is that a new word? If so I hereby reserve all rights to it!), particularly because I like the 1880s-1930s genre of crime and mystery novel that are pretty simple, quick and easy to read... and are generally also Public Domain.

Anyway, to make a long email longer... As I was scouring Project Gutenberg and Manybooks.net today for my latest fix, I came across the "Distributed Proofreaders" project page.

This is a Gutenberg project that aims to speed up the "recovery" of public domain books into ebook format. It does this by getting as many people as possible to proofread individual pages, which are cross-checked and reassembled into complete converted ebooks.

I've signed up and will spend the odd lunch-break from time-to-time helping out.

I think the beauty of this system is that you can help without either having to really get into a book you might not enjoy, but also that you can potentially find a book you really like and help its conversion without losing the enjoyment of eventually reading it, since you'll only have seen a couple of pages from it to start with!

Anyway, take a look if you feel you have the time to give back...

Ooo, that looks interesting. I shall investigate.
I always thought I would like to be a proof reader as I love reading, but hate reading bad English, although looking at the instructions, it seems quite daunting for a first-timer. It's not just reading it. I didn't like the instruction to just put one space after a full stop. I'm a 2-spacer.Big Grin

I don't think I will ever complain about mistakes in books again! It really is quite hard isn't it? I thought I would spot everything, but found I missed things quite easily! Confused
Only happy when I am immersed in a good Kindle book Thumbs Up

I've clocked up a few pages now, my mentor said I did quite well, however it's those darned dashes that get me.

I'm enjoying "doing" the history of signboards and it's really interesting readin really old stuff firstly to see the kind of "women, know your place" world and also how things were spelt in ye olden tymes. We complain nowadays about text speak, but the language has evolved over the years, so who knows how things will be written in the future.
