Kindle Creaking!!

I saw a posting on the Amazon Kindle boards about someone whose Kindle case moves slightly and occassionally creaks and wondered if anyone else has found this happening to themselves.

I think since the casing is plastic-y it's just something your Kindle might experience depending on where you hold your Kindle while reading. Also a lot of plastic like gadgets you often -- well I do anywhere - feel a slight movement when you hold them a certain way, a natural give of the material.

Not sure if I'm explaining it correctly. Blush

Just reading the post and the one response the OP got I tested it out and I seems only if you lightly press near the page turn button and the screen. But not always. I think it seems to be due to the plastic being weakened - for want of a better word - where the page turn button are 'cut out' of the main body of the Kindle. Because the buttons have to press and depress to turn pages the plastic has to move slightly to allow you to flip pages without damaging your buttons. That part of the Kindle has to have some give so to speak.

I know that Kindle 2 owners complained of loud page turn clicks, I think to get the noise reduced they have had to make the area of the buttons and around them able to move slightly to avoid the loud clicking of the harder K2 buttons.

Also I've found that the creaking noise and a lot of the movement can be caused by the way you hold the Kindle to read. If you have a good hold on the back of the device near the buttons so you can easily flip the buttons you can feel a slight give of the plastic, both front and back near the buttons themselves but no 'creaking noise'.

So it's a combination of the way you hold the Kindle and how tightly you grip the device. If you are gripping too tightly common sense tells you that when you release your hold the plastic will expand back to it's original shape.

But that said it doesn't worry me I tested it carefully to see but there is no obvious movement of the casing and I found it was hit and miss to make it happen. So I think it's caused by the natural give of the casing around the page flip buttons and the manner of the user holds and operates his/her Kindle.

RE: Kindle Creaking!!

I think you just have to accept some people will moan about ANYTHING.

It's a plastic box with a screen costing £100 not a £50,000 mercedes benz.

How long before someon drops it in the bath and complains via a 1star review that it's not water proof to 50 meteres?

RE: Kindle Creaking!!

I think my left hand side page turn buttons are slightly less 'clicky' than the right, but I can't say that either is distracting. Any device made of plastic and designed particularly to be lightweight is going to be slightly creaky when prodded in the right place. The solution - a kindle with a colour lcd screen made of metal and glass that weighs as much as an encyclopaedia. Ooops that's an iPad.

RE: Kindle Creaking!!

I agree with you Lou. I found that the left side button are less creaky/clicky.

That said I have found that I prefer to navigate with my left hand anyways. I find it much more comfortable to flip pages with my left hand over my right.

I also find when you get 'into' a book you don't notice the movement or any creaking/clicking that happens. Also I think it's just a cause and effect. Everyone wanted the lightest reader and to do that you need the lightest material and whichever material that is will have it's own inherant habits. With plastic, especially a light plastic, movement is what happens. Cause and effect.

RE: Kindle Creaking!!

My lefthand page turn buttons definitely have a more defined click than the righthand ones, maybe because I tend to use the righthand ones more. I'm not too bothered, but it does make me more aware, when I do use them, when I turn a page.

RE: Kindle Creaking!!

Mine creaks if you squeeze the top above the screen, the case gives a little. Also have much louder left page advance.

RE: Kindle Creaking!!

Are we all talking about Kindle 3 ?? mine is a 3 and it doesn't creak at all and I was thinking that maybe it is because it is much smaller and thinner than previous versions - maybe a good idea to state which one you have when mentioning about the creaking

RE: Kindle Creaking!!

my k3 creaks a bit near the right turnpage button, left side doesnt. Also seems to depend on how i hold it. maybe there is something "hard" behind the case near the left buttons and there is more space around the right side- might account for a little bit of give
