Cannot open my downloads on Kindle Fire HD

Whenever I click on a down load I get this message - attempt to invoke virtual method 'int java.lang.String.index (int) on a null reference.  I  have no idea what this means or what I can do about it.   The message offers me the chance to click okay and when I do the message goes away but I still don't get the download open.
Any ideas what I can do please?

No I have no idea what That means either, possibly saying you need java script????

What sort of things are you trying to download and using what, browsers / downloader?

I've had issues with some browsers just declining to download( no message), but have found mini opera very reliable , so I just use that do downloads and haven't bothered exploring why the others wont.

But your sounds like you get the download, but it won't open. That sound like it's a file type no recognised by the machine or an incomparable with android file.

Really need to know more about what it , for instance pdfs, and zip files among others require you to install an app to work, some vids or music files need codec or special players to work

I've just googled that message and it's a common response to people who have been writing their own app/ reprogramming their device, so assuming you haven't rooted the kindle and been messing about in the source code, in which case it's your own fault, my money is on what ever app your using to oppe n the download being defective

Thank you.  No, I certainly haven't intentionally played around with the coding.  I'll have a look at the app.
