Kindle Pre-Release

Apologies if this has already been covered - I did a quick search but couldn't find anything.
Is Kindle's pre-release option worth considering?
Has anybody tried it?

RE: Kindle Pre-Release

Hi Rosen,

I've done three variants with my last three books: a month long preorder, a two week preorder, and no preorder.

By far the best was the two week preorder. The shorter run up results in less sales velocity dilution than the month (which can bugger your launch day rank as the sales get attributed at the point of preorder, not on launch day on Amazon: for wide titles, Apple et al count preorders twice for ranking, upon order and AGAIN on release).,

A two week run still gives you a day 1 surge of readers, the page links to set up advertising early, and let's you ride the Hot New Releases a little longer (because the preorder period doesn't count against the clock for HNR, but you can list as a HNR on preorder).

Next time I'm looking for a big launch, it'll be a short preorder again.

RE: Kindle Pre-Release

Thank you very much for this information. I shall ponder. Usually I'm not organised enough to set up pre-ordering, but this time I just might be.

Worth bearing in mind that unless you're absolutely certain it's in pristine condition, don't use pre-order because in the last fortnight you aren't allowed to change your file. If there are errors, even if a late beta reader spots them, the thing will go out with those errors in.

They actually reduced the lockout to 72 hours. Source: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201499420

RE: Kindle Pre-Release

Oh, that's a darned sight more useful. Someone sent me a book to beta read and I finished it the day before it was due out. He's paid a proofreader too, and there were loads of errors. Obvious stuff, but he assumed as she was a professional (or at least, was being paid) that it was all fine. He spent a sleepless night, he told me, and changed it all as soon as he could, but a number of those books went out looking as if he couldn't write. Scary stuff!

They will manually swap a file out in the last 72 hours if you email support - but at a cost of being locked out for a year. I wouldn't think it was worth being on the naughty list, but if it's in that bad shape then it might be worth it.

He's over it now. Not a happy bunny, though.
