Exclamation Can't register your new Kindle Paperwhite? Here's a likely solution.

I bought a Kindle Paperwhite for my wife's birthday from the Amazon Kindle store 2 weeks ago. When it arrived it was registered to me. We de-registered it and then attempted to register it to her account. Everything we tried failed to work.

On Sunday I spent about an hour with Kindle support who talked me through various options to try and fix it. None worked. The source of the problem seemed to be the firmware version which was (3175970011). The option to update the firmware was greyed out (suggesting it was already up to date) and an attempt to update it manually following the instructions given over the phone also failed. They eventually gave up and sent me a new Kindle which arrived about 6hrs later!

The replacement Kindle had exactly the same firmware version and had exactly the same problem. Eventually I did some poking around myself and discovered that they'd directed me to the wrong update. The correct update for a Kindle paperwhite who's Serial Number begins with G090 can be found here:

Right-click on the "Download software update 5.8.10" link and save the file on your hard disk. Plug your Kindle in to your PC and then drag and drop that downloaded ".bin" file onto the mapped drive that should appear in Windows Explorer for your Kindle (make sure to drop it onto the drive itself and not into the "Documents" folder therein). Then right-click on the drive and select the "Eject" option. At this point your Kindle should start to apply the software update. Let it finish and reboot and you should now be able to register your Kindle to your Amazon account.
