Star Some Good Resources on KDP Select + A Free KENPC Payout Calculator

Hello Authors and Publishers!

Whilst browsing around self-publisher communities such as this one, I noticed that quite a few people, especially those newer to self-publishing, seem to be confused about KDP Select and the various elements surrounding it - Kindle Unlimited, KOLL but mostly KENPC. Which is why I decided to write a guide on these subject and thought it would be a good idea to bring the best pieces over to here. We also made a free KENPC calculator to go along with the post.

Here's my curation of all the main parts of the article:
  • The main benefits of KDP Select are: 1) having access to the promotional tools - the free promo and the countdown deal, 2) opportunities for more exposure and more income from KU and KOLL - all of this in exchange for agreeing to exclusivity with Amazon.
  • Kindle Unlimited and Kindle Owners Lending Library are loan-based programs allowing readers to read books without owning a copy. Amazon pays publishers for books borrowed for the number of pages read using their KENPC page count system.
  • The KDP Select Global Fund has been on a consistent upward trend which indicates that the program is holding strong and we can expect further developments to keep unfolding.
  • In 2016, Amazon paid out a total of $186,000,000 for eBooks borrowed through KU and KOLL. The average KENP per-page payout rate was $0.00487

The 2 main questions that will help you decide whether this is a good choice for you: 1) What are your goals? 2) Where is your audience?
And here are the graphics. Took me a good while to gather all the research and visualize it in a nice way but I'm confident that this will be quite useful and you'll like them.

A Visual Summary of 'The KDP Select Deal'

And here's the KENPC payout calculator. It estimates your payout for KENP pages read based on past months payout rates, then converts your payment in GBP as well as EUR. It's quite simple but I think it can be useful. Don't worry, there is no catch - it's 100% free, no strings attached.

Hope this is useful!

And also wanted to know - have you, the UK writers and publishers, chosen to go wide or are most of you gone exclusive with KDP select?

The trend per page seems to be downwards which is a big shame!

I've just had an email to say the fund for this month is $19 million so perhaps there's hope for the page read payment to rise slightly.

The payout will likely go down as long as number of self-publishing authors grow. The more books released the more diluted the fund gets. It's natural progression. It's good that there are more and more authors, but it's also double-edged sword. Only way payout would rise noticeably is if Amazon decides to raise the fund by more than 1 million each year.
