Easy newbie question

Hi all,
I'm new here, so thanks for any help you can give.
I'm currently converting some articles I've published on a hobby website into a Kindle book. I've bought a couple of ebooks books to help me with the process, but despite what I've read I've found that I'm still a little confused. It could be that things on the KDP site have changed since the book were written. Anyhow...
I've been using Word -- pasting the text from my html files into Word and saving without formatting. That seems straightforward enough.
What's confusing me most is about images.
The articles I'm including in the book are quite image-heavy. What I thought I understood was that I would have to insert them into my Word file, upload my Word file and then upload the images separately in a zip file to the KDP site. Today I uploaded the Word file as it currently stands to take a look at it in the previewer. I'd also inserted a couple of images into it, and although I didn't upload them separately they do appear in the previewer and they seem to look okay.
Can anyone please tell me whether it's still necessary to upload the images in a zip file? Despite much reading, and a lot of Googling, I'm still confused about something I suspect must be quite straightforward.
Many thanks for any help.

So sorry piglet, the first one is always the worst, and I can't help you because I didn't need to upload images. Somebody will be along soon to help out.

What I Read

RE: Easy newbie question

I produced a small textbook with 30 b/w images, and all the images are embedded in the Word file which I uploaded to KDP without any problem.
To keep the Word file size as low a possible I used a graphics programme to reduce the size of each jpg image while still retaining resolution.

RE: Easy newbie question

Many thanks, Anna and Gordon Smile
It sounds as though it's no longer necessary to upload the pictures in a zip file. I've tried to find a more up-to-date ebook to help me with the process but haven't yet had any luck. Or a website! If anybody knows of something written in 2016 or later then please do point me towards it!
With thanks again, and best wishes,
Piglet
