What I Read

Intelligent detection

Researching for a book on Victorian murders, I found this wonderful quote
1897 police statement: There are three theories. The unfortunate lady might died accidentally, or there is the possibility of suicide, or there is the still more terrible supposition of murder. All these possibilities are the subject of consideration and investigation.
Erm, with that degree of intelligent detection the mystery surprisingly remained unsolved . . .

Just shy of 90% for the Met for murder. Compare that to more like 60% in the USA (or 30% for sexual offences here) and it's pretty obvious how incredible the Murder Investigation Teams are. They get the brightest staff, the best funding, and a great deal of public goodwill & assistance.
