Amazon Echo

We invited Alexa into our home.  Now what do we do with her?
Amazon Echo
SIL has one, she seemed to just use it for timing her cooking.
Best mate has one, not sure what he does with it.
I didn't buy anything for MrJoo for his birthday, so he made me buy it.
So far, I'm just getting it to play random songs (such as I Was Made for Dancing, by Leif Garrett and now I'm on The Bee Gees SmileBig Grin)
Has anyone else got one, if so, what does Alexa do for you?
Hedgehogs are waking up now, so put some water and seeds out for them, they'll reward you with a calling card.
While you are at it, water and feed the birds too. Thumbs Up And come and talk about it at GardenWildlifeUK

RE: Amazon Echo

I bought an echo for my Mum a while back. She's disabled, so her independence is very limited. For her Alexa is the key to operating the smart lighting (Phillips Hue), the TV (via Logitech Harmony), the thermostatic radiators, and a handful of Belkin voice activated plugs (used for e.g. a heater, a coffee machine with the physical switch always set on 'on'). She also uses it for audiobooks, for music, news, and makes extensive use of the timer to remind her when it's pill time ("Alexa, set time for three pm every day" for example). I'm intending to use IFTTT to hook Alexa in to be able to open the front door remotely, and also set up IFTTT so she can open/ close the curtains.

RE: Amazon Echo

We have Hue lighting, so she turns that off. We also have a Nest, but I'm not sure we've tried that yet.
MrJoo wanted it as our internet radio in the kitchen is a bit old now and keeps dropping out (or taking all of dinner time to turn on to a channel)

RE: Amazon Echo

Ask her lots of questions.

Actually, call her a bitch, her reply is excellent Big Grin

Our friends have one so we had fun asking it lots of silly questions. Saying Good Morning makes her give you a fact of the day and saying movie quotes to her sometimes makes her respond with the rest of the line or a funny reply.

We also played music on it, but not before thinking up some random things. Sometimes you get brilliant responses you'd have never known had you not said random stuff.

Not that this is useful at all, but its fun Big Grin
