Wow. I had no idea that you could manipulate the pages read. Particularly mean of Amazon to assume the author had to be at fault.

Adam was lucky Amazon conversed with him at all, they have a habit of closing accounts then only sending form responses when you try to discuss with them.

He was not the only one whose account was closed. Some writers are pulling out of KU for fear that they will be next.

RE: Author's Amazon account deleted - beware if you are in KU

I was considering putting some of my books back into KU, but having read this, I won't do that right now. Fiddling the pages read has been going on for some time now. Apparently, the con artists were putting a hyperlink at the front of "their" books, asking readers to click on it, and it took them to the end of the book, which at the time registered with Amazon's bots that the entire book had been read. I thought they were going to close that loophole.

They solved that quite some time ago. Now we have proved that when readers use the 'page flip' to read the book (which it was not designed for, but many readers do use) the page reads do not register. I have also proved that if a reader gets to the end of your book and does not close it, but instead returns to the beginning, perhaps to check what other books you have written, the page reads do not register, I had a KDP rep phone me, and the reader, and we proved the point. We are also getting a lot more 'one page' reads. Amazon keep sending the boiler plate reply that they can't find anything wrong.Angry

Wow, I've been out of the loop for so long that I didn't know all this was going on. Thanks for the heads up, Jan. You'd have though Amazon would have been able to sort this all out by now.

There's a very long thread on the KBoards. Some writers have lost 90% of their income, while others haven't been affected at all.

Some writers have made videos of what happens when you don't close at the end of the book, and have sent them to Amazon, but have had no luck with getting an explanation.

Jan, thanks for posting this issue.
I was thinking about going into KU. Now I'll do some research before I decide.
