Amazon paperbacks

Hi all and a happy new year.
I was wondering if anyone has taken advantage of the amazon paperback feature whereby your ebook can be magically converted into an actual print copy? If so what are your thoughts?

RE: Amazon paperbacks

Just had an email about this. Sounds like they're trying to

a) remove the barriers to creating a paperback (just click a button)
b) integrate it into KDP more, rather than forcing authors to a separate service

I wonder if they'll try it with ACX next.

RE: Amazon paperbacks

I tried it and thought it was easy to use. The resulting paperback was 95% the way I wanted it to be with the only problem being the design/placement of the spine text.

RE: Amazon paperbacks

There has been quite a bit of discussion on kboards about it. Many people are waiting until the kdp print option includes proof and author copies - at the moment you have to approve it from the electronic proof and there is no provision for reduced price author copies. However as far as I'm concerned this is balanced out by the fact that I can order using Prime (=free delivery) and they arrive in a day or two in the UK, and also the royalties appear almost at once on your dashboard. So although you are paying the retail price for your own copies, you are then getting royalties to set against that.
As far as I can tell the quality is similar to that of Create Space.

I'm not at all sure I understand this.
Isn't Createspace owned/run by Amazon?
Why are they doing this? Will they be closing Createspace down?

I'm probably being thicky mcthick of thickchester but I'm confused.

There's a bit more to it than just clicking the  'create paperback option'. You need to make a number of changes to your source document e.g. set appropriate margins, add page numbers and remove index.

It took me a couple of goes to get it all the way I wanted it so I ended up buying two copies of my book but I'd set the price to the minimum allowed so it was no real issue. Some authors may not like the idea of the 'draft version' being available for public sale but I'm not popular enough to worry about a rush of sales the moment the paperback becomes available.

RE: Amazon paperbacks

One of the biggest upsides to this that I'm hoping for is the lack of outrageous shipping costs and wait times compared to Createspace. I have a book to publish soon, so I might try this - I'd rather wait for proof copies though.
