What new releases have you seen lately?

This post was last modified: 25 Mar 2016 05:05 PM by Jonathan Hill.
Thought I'd start a thread for cinema buffs.

So... to kick off... I've seen Hail, Caesar! - Coen Brothers - bit meh - beautifully shot with some very funny moments but just a bit of a mess really.

The Witch - really creepy movie that gets under your skin - but the ending will divide viewers. Not sure if it was good or ridiculously over the top.

High-Rise - Super stylish but really did not take to this. Tom Hiddleston has a fine body but not even that could make this movie special...

And a bit further back, The Survivalist - heart-stopping post-apocalyptic movie, not for the faint-hearted but possibly my film of the year thus far!

That;s interesting, Jonathan - I was quite tempted by 'Hail Caesar' but I told myself to be cautious about going to see it as I remembered that I hated 'Burn after Reading' (I think that's the Coen Brothers too) which was advertised as being hilarious but just wasn't.

I almost never get to the cinema - the last thing I saw was 'Jurassic World' last year.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - yesterday. My expectations weren't high as I found the prequels (episodes 1 - 3) increasingly disappointing. But I was pleasantly surprised and definitely entertained. What struck me most was how very like the original 1977 film it was. The plot and the feel echoed the first film so much that I felt that there must have been a conscious decision to go back and use it as a template. And it worked pretty well.  Nothing wrong with a good formula well used. And it was also a good decision to bring back some of the old characters to link this new venture with the early films. Personally I still found Han Solo the most engaging character. And Chewbacca had some good moments too. The new stars were all right but didn't quite manage to upstage the old. John Boyega looked like he could grow in stature if his character is developed in future Star Wars films. But it was good to see the Millennium Falcon  in action again. All in all good but not brilliant. But I'd be happy to watch it again when it comes out on DVD.

What I Read

RE: What new releases have you seen lately?

I have an Unlimited card for my local fleapit, so I see at least one movie there most weeks. Smile

I loved Burn After Reading!

Cohen Brothers films are a bit like old English Rep, in the way the same cast crops up time after time, so at some level there's a bit of fun seeing who's playing what this time. Hail Caesar seemed like a series of vignettes strung together with a bit of a through-plot. There were definitely some good bits and interesting casting against type. Loved the singing cowboy bits, & the Busby Berkeley scenes. Even the infamous John Wayne "Aw..." got a look in.

Last thing I saw was 10 Cloverfield Lane. It's basically a 3-hander cabin fever style movie. Mary Elisabeth Winstead wakes up after a car accident, in an underground bunker with two men (John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr) claiming they've rescued her, and global annihilation is going on outside. It's not a direct sequel to Cloverfield, so I don't thing you'd be at a disadvantage if you haven't seen that one. Good, tense suspense movie, had me hooked from the start.

We need more John Goodman films!

Possibly going to see Batman v Superman this weekend . . .

Oh, and Zootropolis. Cracking crime story cunningly disguised as an animated feature. Okay, so there were a few bits that were more Scooby Doo than Raymond Chandler, but don't be fooled into thinking that because it's an animation it's just for kids (and that's not because I'm professionally interested in CG stuff!)

Anyone seen any of the big Oscar films?

La La Land I loved.
Moonlight I was hoping to love and, while there were some superb aspects, it left me cold overall for some reason I can't pinpoint...

I've seen The Shape of Water the other day. The movie is good, but I expected it to be on whole another level considering the 13 Oscar nominations.

Darkest Hour ... Gary Oldman is a shoo-in for the Oscar. And The Post ... great performance by Streep.
