Producing an Audio Book for Audible via ACX - Sample

This post was last modified: 20 Dec 2015 10:20 AM by Daphne.
I am planning to narrate and produce an audio book and know - nothing. I have been reading submission requirements on ACX and as many blog posts as I can find by authors who have done this. I looked for threads here on KUF but found nothing recent - although some older threads suggested that a few authors here were interested in producing an audio book. I would love to hear from anyone who has done this or who plans to. If anyone wants to embark on the project with one of their own books, it would be good to share experience/advice.

RE: Producing an Audio Book for Audible via ACX - advice? experience?

Daphne, there have been quite a few threads on this topic on Kboards and I think Mark E. Cooper who is UK-based has been involved, but I am not sure if he is a member here as well or not. It might be worth having a quick look there. I am often tempted to give this a bash, but there is never enough time for either me or for my preferred narrator (Alex Perry, this means you) who has just the right accent for some of my stuff.
(apologies for sending you over to another forum!)

Thanks, Cecilia. The only thread I found on KBs related to ACX options for non US authors, which is no longer an issue now we UK authors can go directly to ACX. But I have found some software for editing out my vocal blunders and am happily experimenting. Have also ordered a decent microphone as I currently sound as if I am speaking from a dustbin. All good fun and another skill to try and master. You'll have to have a word with that Alex fellow Smile so at least one of your books can be made available to listeners. I will report back if I ever succeed in making my audio book, although it is having to fit in with other demands so may take a while.

Best of luck with your audiobook adventure, Daphne! Audiobooks are on my wish-list, but I'm (somewhat forlornly) waiting for ACX to open up to New Zealand.

I've retrieved some ACX-related links from a KB thread I bookmarked (the comments at the end of some links are from Mark Cooper, who's had good success with audio):

The above threads are useful for issues of pricing and for recruiting and selecting a narrator. Interestingly no one sets out how they set about successfully narrating their own book. Maybe this should tell me something!

This is the blog post that has inspired me: How To Record And Create Your Own Audio Book For ACX Audible
I have now downloaded  Audacity (free) and watched some instruction on youtube so I can use it for editing.
I am now awaiting my new Microphone - taking my investment in the project so far to £30.50

The blog post above stops tantalizingly before the writer successfully uploads his audiobook. But once my microphone arrives I will be starting to record. It may be that I need to buy a more expensive one. I may give up in frustration. Either way, I will report back in case any other author wants to give this a go.

I have recorded all the book, but it is not upload-ready yet. Here is a small sample.

Well done, Daphne - you have such a clear voice and it sounded good to me - also the story extract was quite tantalising.
It's great that you're experimenting like this with doing it at home. I've often wondered if this would work or not and it seems as if I may be able to benefit from your testing process.
I've heard the Zoom mention as a possible sound recorder but it might be that we already have some sort of sound equipment in the house - must investigate...

Good for you, Daphne! Your voice is super-well suited for your work. And you seemed to get lots of solid tips regarding the technical side on KBoards.

I recorded a little of mine ages ago, and I did quite like the result, but the size of the project (c. 600,000 words for the first three books) was daunting. If ACX ever becomes available for Kiwis I'll approach a professional NZ narrator - although the cost would give me pause.

Thanks, Cecilia. I have now recorded all the book, although quite a bit of audio-editing is required. I will make use of it somewhere. I may try ACX or may simply distribute it via my website. Either way it has been fun and I have learned a lot.
