Too prolific?

Good piece by Stephen King about being prolific:
http://www.nytimes.com...

I'd consider Stephen King rather prolific but one author he mentions (John Creasey) wrote over 500 books under 21 pseudonyms... phew! Is that a record?

Barbara Cartland managed 722. But the one in the Guinness Book of Records is Ryoki Inoue with 1079 novels so Creasey is miles away from that (though he did found the CWA so go him!).

An interesting piece, Katherine. Thanks for the link.
I'd be more impressed with someone holding down a (completely different) full time job and churning them out evenings and weekends, but they're still pretty impressive figures.

I like the comment from one of the 'NYT picks' that when writers became sufficiently successful they ignore the editor and churn out faster, more sloppily written books. Nowadays, of course, some of the most successful writers have a stable of ghosts writing books in the famous author's name.

Which reminds me of Scribbler's little book The Ghost Writer and if you follow that link it will take you to lots of books by that name - so you might want to add 'by Ryan Thomas'.

I suppose it depends on whether you want the satisfaction of achieving something, even if it is just to get your ideas on paper, or if you want to get rich. To write well and to get rick is hard. The road less travelled, perhaps.
