It seems to me that some of the people who outline to an amazing depth may actually have written what others would call a first draft by the time they've finished the outline.
Having experimented recently with the snowflake outline method I don't think I will try it again - it left me with a huge gaping hole in the plot, a missing character and a lot more words still to write. I am not sure I was doing it right! But I usually find I can only discover the plot by writing myself into it and not just by thinking or making notes.
