George has a point. I'd be pretty peeved if I bought a book then found I couldn't redownload it because the author had unpublished.

Yes, that makes sense I suppose... but what happens if the author changes the book significantly if/when they decide to republish it?

Depends how you republish it. If you do so with the same ISBN/ASIN, then it is considered the same book and you can ask Amazon to notify all who have bought it already, but they will only do so if there are significant updates. Then they'll invite those who have already bought to download the latest update if they wish. If it's republished under a new ISBN/ASIN, then it's considered a completely new version of the book. Amazon will list both the old and new one, and anyone wanting the new version will have to buy it.
