I have an idea for an educational children's book. I would like to produce it as an ebook, but don't really know where to start. Does anyone know of an idiot-friendly program that would talk me through the whole process? Any advice at all would be very gratefully accepted. Thanks.

A good place to start would be read several existing educational eBooks for children.
Get a feel for how those authors approach the subject and an understanding of the particular
requirements of that type of book. Good luck with your writing.

Write the book in Word. Beyond that, if you can use this forum, you can use Amazon's self-publishing platform.

Of course, there are other eBook providers, but Amazon Kindle is a good place to start.

Thank-you Gordon and Rosen for your reply's. I'm so glad I've discovered this site. I've been wanting to do this for ages but the technical side of it has put me off. It's great talking to people who have already done it. Do you have any advice on images, whether to use an illustrator or if it's possible to download them for free?

Images can be tricky to get right. You may find yourself having to spend an afternoon tinkering with your manuscript to get the images just right. It's a bit hit and miss, so I recommend giving it a try and getting back to us if it's not how you want it.

One thing to bear in mind is that the eBook format is much better suited to inline images (i.e. ones that have text above and below but not to the left or the right) than images that appear to the side of the text.

Having said that, I had an email from Amazon recently saying they've developed a new children's book creator tool designed to deal with images, so it looks like the process has changed since I last tried it.

As for whether you should have illustrations, it depends on the age group and subject matter, but as a general rule, I'd say illustrations add value to a children's book. I use Katie W. Stewart for my illustrations. She is very talented and on the lookout for new clients.

As Rosen says, there's some software you can now download from amazon's kdp for creating illustrated books for children. I haven't tried it because you need Windows 7 or later and I have an older version of Windows on my pc, but it looks good for picture books with small amounts of text... there's a demo video on amazon! (look for 'Kindle Kids').

Good luck with the book.
