Download Items Stuck As "Pending"

This post was last modified: 03 Feb 2011 10:49 AM by lwellbro.
Being obstinate (according to my wife - I prefer "tenacious"!), I like to fix problems before I resort to calling for help, so I'm asking for a little assistance before I admit defeat and call Amazon Customer services - can any of you help?

I have a subscription to the Independent, and, until today, I've always downloaded it (and, for that matter, any purchased books) via my WiFi connection at home. Today, I rushed out of the house, and decided to try (for the first time since getting my Kindle for Christmas) to get the Independent via 3G. Despite having a good signal (3 bars at least), it refuses to download, and, when I go to "View Downloading Items", it shows as 0% downloaded and being in a "pending" state. It also shows the same when I go to my Kindle account at amazon.co.uk. I've restarted my Kindle (menu/settings/menu/restart), switched the wireless off and on, and even selcted the "Send wirelessly to Kindle" from my Kindle account at amazon.co.uk - all to no avail.

My 3G connection appears to be working, as I can access the Kindle store and the web browser works, but it won't download the Independent!

Any ideas?

Try a reboot: hold the power switch to the right for 15 seconds, then leave the Kindle alone for 30 seconds while it recovers.
Are you really connected to the Internet? Can you browse a site OK? You may need to disconnect / reconnect to the WiFi.
The "sync items" may be enough to remind Amazon that your Kindle is really there and ready...

Chris,

Thanks for the response, but have tried the reboot, followed by a "sync items" as well, with no joy. I can browse sites and also the Kindle Store (3G showing 4 bars) with no problem. It's a real odd one....!

I have now accepted my failings and have spoken to the very nice people at Amazon Customer Services (I must admit to being hugely impressed by them - I work with many IT support organisations and Amazon, so far, are doing a great job in getting their customer services right).

Having been through the "re-boot/re-sync/re-send" scenario a few times, I was passed to 2nd level support who asked me to check my software level (menu/settings, and it's down the bottom of the page), as they suspect it's a software error.

My Kindle is running v3.0.2 and I've been advised to upgrade to v3.0.3, which I will do later this evening (haven't got my sync cable with me at the moment). I'll let you know how I get on!

When that doesn't work...

try "deleting" the book from Amazon Manage My Kindle. If you have paid for it, that might not be easy! but if you can, then re-buy it, that might shake it into doing something useful.

OR install Kindle for PC, and send it there and see if it works OK.

RE: Download Items Stuck As "Pending"

Well - that worked a treat!

Followed the instructions that Amazon emailed me (I've attached them at the end of this post if anyone's interested), updated my Kindle to v3.0.3. I switched my wireless router off to make sure I connected via 3G, switched wireless on, and, hey presto, it downloaded in a couple of seconds. I also got today's Independent via 3G as well - no problem.

Thanks for the hints and tips anyway....

Instructions for updating:-
You can download the latest Kindle software update to your computer and transfer it to your Kindle via USB. Here's how:

1. Visit the link below to download the latest software update file directly to your computer:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/kindlesoftwareupdates

2. Turn your Kindle on and connect it to your computer using the USB cable.

3. Use your computer's file browser to copy the update file from your computer to the Kindle root directory. (The root directory contains a number of folders — such as "audible," "documents," and "music" — and is typically denoted by a "device" icon).

4. Check your file browser's file transfer progress bar to ensure that file transfer to your Kindle is complete. When you're confident the file has transferred successfully, you can use your computer's unmount or eject function to safely disconnect Kindle from your computer.

5. Disconnect the USB cable from Kindle and your computer.

6. Go to the Home screen, press the Menu key, and select "Settings."

7. Press the Menu key again, and then select "Update Your Kindle." (This option will be grayed out if the most recent update has already been installed.)

8. Select "OK" when prompted if you want to perform an update.

I've just updated my software after seeing your post.

It went OK, took a while, which makes you nervous if watching closely Huh

Not noticed any differences yet but only went from 3.02 to 3.03.

I had the same problem but I already had the latest software so couldn't update. Went into menu from the home screen, clicked settings, menu again, clicked restart. Kindle went through a complete restart, loaded up, problem solved.
