RE: Book Of The Web

I can't believe I only just found this today. I'd bookmarked readingthenet some time ago, but normally just stick to browsing this forum on my Kindle, but WOW, what a great "book". It's not going in a collection, it's staying on my top page Big Grin

I am surprized not more people are using this or maybe there are just not replying to post. It is great, I met someone today with who owns a kindle and they could believe this service. Another satisfied customer for you. A possible member for KUF. Thumbs Up

What I Read

RE: Book Of The Web

Have just downloaded the Book of the Web to my Kindle. I'm a little lacking in the techno department and have been struggling to use the normal browser, as I don't like the way I have to zoom in to pages, then keep criss-crossing the page to read it (I may be doing something wrong there but can't work it out!) The Book of the Web is a blessing - I can see the whole page & search like I can on the PC. Thank you! Groovy

Is there a way to delve into the .mobi file and tweak the code? I assume is .html?

RE: Book Of The Web

Just tried to get the Manchester Airport site on Book of the web. Its there but wont let me do anything. It says this tool requires javascript to work properly. What is javascript and can it be downloaded to kindle? Would be very grateful if someone could help me.

To answer my own question (don't worry - I do this all over the web!):

I converted the file from .mobi to .htmlz then opened it in a text editor (Text Wrangler for Mac in my case).

Lo and behold - all the .html is there for me to edit.

So while the Wedding is on on Friday I'll be having a right good tinker about, adding my own links, removing links to the Daily Mail and the Sun, and allsoerts of other fun.

Hopefully I then just re-convert back to .mobi and I have my own 'johnwin book of the web' Cool

One last point though - this is a question for the OP (Robin Gardner) - under what sort of licence have you released the book of the web? Is it creative commons or a GPL licence? I don't want to upset anyone by reviewing and altering the code without permission. I won't be releasing it (either free or commercially) so I hope it is ok.

RE: Book Of The Web

Just checked this out. Really good. Will be handy when we take our son to softplay as I usually read BBC news through my mobile but it is really slow and tiny text. Will also forward it to my husband.
Check out my books on Goodreads
Please excuse my spelling and grammar, I often have a toddler perched on my lap.
