Help! How do I send a DMCA?

I have just found a epub copy of Treespeaker offered on a forum. Of course, the forum owner states that they can't do anything about it, I have to go to the sites offering the book and issue them with an infringement notice. That means four notices. But the first one I went to says this -

A) Notice for Claims of Intellectual Property Violations.
If you believe that your work has been copied in a way that constitutes copyright infringement, or that your intellectual property rights have been otherwise violated, please provide ***************** with the following information:

[*]1. An electronic or physical signature of the person authorized to act on behalf of the owner (the "ComplainantSmile of the copyright or other intellectual property interest that has allegedly been infringed;

[*]2. A description of the copyrighted work or other intellectual property that the Complainant claims has been infringed;

[*]3. A description of where the infringing material or activity that the Complainant is located on the Site, with enough detail that we may find it on the Site (e.g., unique URL to the file);

[*]4. The name, address, telephone number and email address of the Complainant;

[*]5. A statement by the Complainant that upon a good faith belief the disputed use of the material or activity is not authorized by the copyright or intellectual property owner, its agent or the law; and

[*]6. A statement by the Complainant made under penalty of perjury, that the Complainant is the copyright or intellectual property owner or is authorized to act on behalf of the copyright or intellectual property owner and that the information provided in the notice is accurate.

[*]

Do I really have to do all that...for all four sites? And what the **** is an electronic signature?

You only have to write it once and copy it, with links to the pages. An electronic signature is just your typed signature on the email.

I copy their requirements into an email, and work my way through the list. It's a bore, but probably worth doing.

I just send the emails and try not to think about it. Piracy may not affect us all that much...

I've just sent one to see what happens. I think they'll probably ignore it, because I refused to include my street address and telephone number as they stipulated. There's no way I'm giving that information out online unless I trust the site...and why would I trust a site that pirates books?

You're probably right, Lexi. Paulo Coelho actually likes people to pirate his books because he says it brings him more sales from people buying his other books after they've read a pirated one. I'm not that confident.

Nor am I - and it may be different for famous authors, who are easier to find. But I tell myself the downloaders probably would not have bought my book anyway.

It's certainly nothing in comparison to the number of free copies many of you hand out. Why go to a pirate site if you can just wait for a book to become free?

I don't do free any more. And besides, it's one thing if an author decides to make a book free temporarily, quite another if some random stranger decides to do it for her.

I agree that piracy is reprehensible, but it's something we'll have to live with. I was merely trying to point out that the damage is limited and perhaps mostly psychological.
