Free newspapers and mags for the Kindle

I don't know whether your readers are aware that you can download free newspapers and mags using the Calibre software. For example I get The Guardian and the Observer and PcWorld (US version).

RE: Free newspapers and mags for the Kindle

Thanks for the heads up Alan.

If you need to access feed from your favourite sites, we also have our very own feed tool which you can find here : http://www.kuforum.co.uk...

And we also have many pre-configured feeds here : http://www.kuforum.co.uk...

The PCWorld's RSS also doesn't render properly...

I don't know why there isn't an open RSS standard they could all adhere to...

Hi Haydoni,

I have fixed this now.

It's not that the RSS format is wrong - this is a standard and it's fine, it's just that most feeds only include a short summary and our system attempts to then grab the full story off of the actual webpage and it's the formatting of the web page where the full story is that differs all the time. The system usually can make a good guess at where to grab the full story, but sometimes it gets it wrong, or it grabs a load of other stuff as well like links and adverts etc.

When I go in manually I can override the guessing part in most cases and get a much cleaner article.

Sometimes even this doesn't work as the site with the article has broken HTML which the system can't pull from.

Thanks Alan!

Im a complete kindle newbie, but by no means am I a computer novice!

What exactly do you mean by a free newspaper? How is it delivered to teh kindle and what does it look like when you see it?

How do I add them to calibre?

Thanks for your patience!

Hi Phil,

If you have already downloaded Calibre. I'll try and walk you through the free newspaper options.

You will find an option called Fetch News. Click on this and you will find a drop down list of languages. eg English (UK) 22. That means there are 22 UK English language newspapers or magazines available. Or type the newspaper of choice in the box.

Say for example you'd like to download the Independent.

You now have two options. Calibre must be open and running in both options.

1. Download now - This downloads the Independent to Calibre's library
or 2. If you want to download The Independent at say 7 a.m. each day you can also adjust the download to whichever time you like. This will also download to Calibre's library.

Let's say The Independent is now in your Calibre Library.

To get it onto your kindle you have two options.

1. The easy way via USB lead from Kindle to PC
Click on the download and Send to Kindle. USB Lead should detect Kindle plugged in.
or
2. The slightly more complicated way via e-mail option.

a. Click on Preferences.
b. Click on Sharing Books via e-mail
c. Add your KINDLE e-mail address to add e-mail to the top part
d. Tick auto-send.
At the bottom add a mail server eg GMail or Hotmail.

send e-mail from username.

settings smtp.gmail.com port 587
username@gmail.com
password

radio button tls. checked in my case.

test e-mail to see if it works.

I tested the paid Kindle version and the free Calibre one and there is not a great deal of difference. There are more pictures with the Calibre versions but occasionally you get duplicate stories. Since the recent upgrade, the newspapers look neater. There are no adverts in the Kindle/Calibre editions by the way.

Hope I haven't confused you too much. Smile

Bye for now

Thanks

Thanks Paula, that was really useful. Ive got a few newspapers scheduled now and they seem to be working great.

Its a shame there isnt an online service available so that i dont have to leave Calibre running!
