Sounds good news - tho here we show my lack of knowledge again - as authors of the book do we pay for gifting a book like a normal person or is it discounted or (gasp) even free? Not sure how it works.

As a reader it is great news for me as well. I often read a book and want to recommend it to either my Mum or daughter, but have to wait for them to sign into their accounts to buy the book, by which time they may have forgotten about it. With gifting I could get it straight away for them. Smile

I'd also love to see a pre-order option so we can drum up sales in the run-up to a big release.

Don't know, but I suspect we pay, same as everyone else, especially if it counts as a sale. (don't forget we'll also get the royalty, which effectively acts as a discount)

It might be good news for children's ebooks, since then adults will be able to buy kids actual ebooks (rather than amazon vouchers they might spend on erotica by mistake... ) - on the other hand, I still think people who buy books as gifts prefer to buy 'real' books?

Definitely!

I've received a couple of gifted Kindle books from authors in the US (who seem able to gift from US to UK but not vice versa). For the recipient there is an perceived additional value as the email comes through with a nice gift-wrap ribbon logo and it does look rather nice. With this in mind they do make for an excellent prize. Yep, you have to pay for the book (but a % of the royalties will find their way back to you) but since Amazon are considering deleting reviews for purchase that are not verified, this is going to be an important tool when enlisting reviewers.
