Translations to other languages?

I was recently contacted by someone offering translation services for my books.
My books don't sell that well in English so I'm not sure investing in an Italian version would cover the cost of an email reply.
Has anyone else invested in foreign language versions?
Also, how on earth would you sell it and where??

RE: Translations to other languages?

I haven't had any of my books translated, but I know that a decent translation is time-consuming and expensive. If you go with some cheap and cheerful translator, your horror stories could end up as unintentional comedies and do your reputation a lot of damage.

Translation is a very underrated service. I wouldn't dare translate my own books to Danish, even though I spent the first thirty years of my life there.

Thanks, Mads. I can't imagine it would be cheap and that would make it impossible. I like the idea of it though, just not at the moment.

I was quoted £2500 for a translation, and I'm led to believe that's fairly reasonable. It's just not within the budget of most indies.

I don't think it is realistic for indies unless you can strike a deal, e.g. a percentage of the royalties to the translator.

As I am able to write in English, Danish writers sometimes ask me for translations (usually fifty-fifty deals) but I always turn them down. In the first place, I need an editor or a really good proofreader before my books are ready to go, and second, most of these authors sell less than I do which means I'd never earn enough to make it worthwhile.

Under some circumstances you may be able to exchange help, though. E.g. if Mads could translate his own work into Danish and wanted me to edit it while he edited my English books.

On the whole I would be extremely cautious, however. If people offer translations at very low prices, it might be because they are not good enough to ask for more Smile
