Did Amazon give you a free choice of narrator? Finding someone you are happy with (having heard it all inside your head) is the hardest thing, I think.

How are you on guffawing, Anna? I remember the offspring made me remove this verb from one book...

Hmm... the offspring had a point. The British Speech Museum have probably tucked that one away - for the moment anyway.

Are you going to have Replica recorded too? I do hope so. And if you do your dragon ones, be careful to make the dragons sound like I know they do. One almost purrs in a high tone as she bats her eyelids.

I was asked to give my input to what I felt was important and then Amazon Publishing sent me samples from about 4 narrators reading one of my books. I was then asked for my feedback and picked Simon Vance, but that very night Simon emailed me to express how keen he was to record my books, adding that if I was sitting not he fence, to pick him! Talk about making me feel important., lol. He even called me from L.A. a while later to discuss the voices. It was great to have that much input, and that's something I really like about Amazon. It's the same for the book covers. I still feel very connected to the process.

I'm just waiting to see how Remix goes before doing the other books, so if I'm making any mistakes I don't repeat them. I'm aware I'm a total noob at this. I know nothing, but hope to know more.

That's very interesting, Steve. Quite nice, I imagine, to have Amazon filter possible narrators and just offer you the plums.

And we can all learn from Simon Vance, going the extra mile to get a gig he wanted.

How exciting, Lexi! I hope it works out wonderfully well for you.

Audio books are on my wishlist, but ACX is yet to accept Kiwis (I know there's a way around that, but for the moment I'm still holding out for going directly with them). I'd also need to have the first three books done more or less at once, as they're so closely tied together, which means nigh on 600,000 words, which means $$$. Smile On top of that, I need someone who can do a convincing Kiwi accent - an old-fashioned one at that - which limits the field. And no, a Kiwi accent is not the same as an Aussie one - not to our ears, anyway. I was listening to a sample recently with a character who was meant to be a Kiwi, and the vowels had a definite Sydney sound to them.

I'll get there one day! In the meantime, I'll follow the journey of audiobooked KUffers with interest.

I'd love to do audio too - at least once the third book is out. But I can't see narrators flocking to my door, not with my current sales record, and I don't have the $$$ to pay up front!

I don't know about an old fashioned accent, but I can certainly tell modern Kiwi from Australian! I've seen those Lord of the Rungs documentaries! I've watched The Almighty Johnsons! (damn shame they canned it)

Shayne, given how well your books sell I'd imagine any Kiwi actor would be really keen to do them, as much for the exposure as the cash.

Tim, every narrator has to start somewhere, to get experience and a track record, so it might be easier than you think to find a talented newcomer. (If I were an actress I would SO get in on audiobook narrating.) It's important they can handle the technical side, though, as audiobooks with background noises and sniffs and gaps drive listeners mad.
