What I Read

RE: Beta Reader

I used to belong to a writers' group. There were about half a dozen of us, and we'd meet weekly, taking it in turns to read something we'd written recently and wanted feedback on. This was a very supportive arrangement, and, as time progressed, we trusted each other enough to say what we really thought, although always in a positive way. We didn't go in for total assassinations, but we would say if something wasn't working and suggest why that might be. Everyone had a chance to read their work over a period of 2 or 3 sessions, and sometimes people hadn't got anything but were happy to just comment, and sometimes people were in full flow and got to read more often, but it worked out evenly over a period.  I found it gave me the impetus to write something each week, even though I may not get to read it out immediately.

Sadly, the group folded as people went their separate ways, and I've never been able to replace it, as anything available in my area seems to be either well established and very hard to break into, or the sort of creative writing class which I've done in the past but don't really want to do again. Are there on-line versions of the support and challenge I used to enjoy? And if not ....?

I, too, would find it hard to comment on a piece as long as Matt's, but would certainly think about responding to  shorter pieces on a regular basis if others would do the same for me. Just a thought.
