3g query

I had a Kindle for Christmas and I am very happy with it, but I have one query, for 3g to operate does WiFi have to be switched on?

Yep, the menu option is labelled Wireless - this will turn on both 3G and wifi. If an available wifi signal is found then that is used, otherwise it will switch back to 3g
