Shadow of the Demon - Book 3 of the Prophecy of the Kings; A Fantasy Novel

Hi and welcome to the last book in the Prophecy of the Kings trilogy, Shadow of the Demon. My books won a Gold Award in 2010 - http://readersfavorite.com/cat-71.htm?review=3451 I hope you enjoy...

Events are coming to a head. The battle for CarCamel has ended and Kaplyn is seen as the people’s saviour. Catriona, the Thracian Queen, demands that he leads the army in its fight against Trosgarth, with a dragon at his command. However, Kaplyn has other ideas. Dragons terrify him, but he cannot fathom why; after all a dragon helped them to defeat demons in the recent conflict.

It is a conundrum, but it is not his immediate concern for Astalus, the Thracian court wizard, through the use of magic, reveals an image of Vastra, now an old man, held captive in Aldrace. Kaplyn’s fears are realised, for if the enemy have Vastra then they must also have the second crystal from the Tree of Life. A permanent gateway to the demon world is now a reality. Kaplyn’s priority must be to recover the crystal at all costs. Abandoning the army he sets of in pursuit of Vastra, not realising the terrible consequences of his actions for the full horror of his links to Shastlan’s shade are about to be revealed.

Meanwhile, Prince Fiad persuades the allies to march with the knowledge that Astalus can summon dragons. But Astalus has changed and darkness follows him. As the allies draw closer to Trosgarth, the full impact of Fiad’s persuasiveness will cost him and the allies dearly as dragons and demons clash in the final conflict.

RE: Shadow of the Demon - Book 3 of the Prophecy of the Kings; A Fantasy Novel

This is a great review taken from http://sfbook.com/shadow-of-the-demon.htm;

Throughout the prophecy of the Kings series I have been impressed by the high quality of the prose, the excellent character building and the easy but gripping style of the narrative. Shadow of the Demon is no exception, there is a real sense of the dramatic in this concluding volume and the unique individual style becomes even more pronounced. The pace is spot on and the plot full of twists and turns that keep you on your toes and makes the pages flow through your hands as you hasten to seek the conclusion to the story.

The characters and their development remain the core focus of the novel, largely the protagonist Kaplyn and his continued magical anomalies. The ending of the story is quite exceptional, poignant and more than a little bitter sweet.

Shadow of the Demon is a triumph of high fantasy, a rich, rewarding end to a phenomenal series and should not be missed. 5 out of 5 Stars

RE: Shadow of the Demon - Book 3 of the Prophecy of the Kings; A Fantasy Novel

This is a great review and many thanks:
"What else I liked. The pace continues to be fast but steady for most of the story. There were a few twists I didn't see coming and one I expected but never saw. Ummm, how do I explain that without a spoiler. Well, lets just say that there was possibly an easier way out of the Demon problem only David Burrows did not take it. And I respect him all the more for that. All too often a writer introduced a "convenient" magical solution which solves everything and takes the believability of the tale and tosses it out the nearest window. Not this time. Every time our heroes got a foot up, David Burrows knocked them back down, dusted them off and then shoved them under the closest bus. It was truly fun to watch and I enjoyed every tension filled minute of it
The Conclusion. The story ended better than I had hoped without quite being happily ever after. The heroes who remain finish the story with a much brighter future than they started with but all carry the pain of loss and sport the scars of sacrifice. All in all the ending felt just right. And so ends what turned out to be a very strong story. Personally, I hope David Burrows hones his writing skills and continues to write because if this is an example of the stories he has roaming around in his head, I want to read more of them someday."

This review is from http://www.fantasybookreview.co.uk/. It's a great site and well worth a look.

Shadow of the Demon is the third and final instalment in The Prophecy of the Kings trilogy, a story that was begun in Legacy of the Eldric and continued in Dragon RiderThe trilogy is a highly enjoyable series of books to read. If you were looking for comparisons in style and substance then the late Professor Tolkien and the wonderful Robin Hobb would come close. Indeed, The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien was responsible for awakening David Burrows’ interest in fantasy and this in turn led to the author attempting to create a story featuring bold characters and intriguing plot. This aim has certainly been achieved.

The main characters, Kaplyn, Lomar and Lars are by now old friends; they are also strong and well-formed. Shadow of the Demon is a fitting end to this epic fantasy tale and its pages showcase a vivid and original imagination. The narrative is at is strongest when dealing with the past – the creation theory is first-rate, well conceived and genuinely moving, and the way in which Kaplyn experiences the past-life of his shaol (a kind of guardian spirit), Shastlyn, is delightfully well described. The parts where Kaplyn battles with his very real inner demon make for compelling reading as the noble and caring man struggles with violent, cruel and tyrannical compulsions.

I am very pleased with this excellent review.
