And the "jokes":

Quote: Left the shirts to be repaired at Trillip’s.  I said to him: “I’m ’fraid they are frayed.”  He said, without a smile: “They’re bound to do that, sir.”  Some people seem to be quite destitute of a sense of humour.

I have this book on an old cassette and it is read by Arthur Lowe in his best Captain Mainwaring style. For me, he epitomizes Pooter.

A gem indeed.

Thanks, Anna - a good tip. This will be a great audio book to fill a long car journey.

I think he  may have done it on the stage or radio or something as well.  His Dad's Army character was rather pooterish as well, so obvious casting.

RE: Bookclub: The discussion of The Diary of a Nobody (contains spoilers)

I've just read this while away on holiday for a few days - I am not sure I would have finished it otherwise although I'm glad I did. It sort of grew on me as it went along, and some of the jokes were running ones such as Cummings's illnesses. Apart from anything else, it was interesting to get this picture of how people once lived.
I'd like to hear the Arthur Lowe version - I can imagine him being just right for this.

Just chipping in to say, shouldn't this book be on the KUF home page in the Book Club column? Looks like it's a little out of date...
