Well done on the reviews. Strange indeed is the mind of the book-buyer.

Thanks Scribbler/Ignite.

I'm beginning to understand the conventional publishing industry's obsession with genre. Perhaps this writing lark is 95% about writing a specific genre and aiming for that market.

But I still don't like thinking about markets when a story is developing in my mind.

That's exactly what draws me to indie writers Ray. I love the fact that they don't write to a genre or aim at an audience. It gives rise to some stunningly free-form stuff! Smile

If you look at the best sellers on this forum, they are all genre writers staying in one genre. So if your aim is to have a realistic chance of making a living from your writing, that's what you should do. But as Kath says, the beauty of the indie is that you don't HAVE to conform in order to get published.

True, Mads. Look at the success of someone like Lee Childs - not so much the same genre as (largely) the same story over and over again.

Of course, I wouldn't like to be like that. I mean, all that fame and riches are okay if you like that sort of thing.

I was thinking income rather than number of downloads. Some of the lower profile members, like Shayne Parkinson and Mel Comley, appear to be doing very well on that score. But as Ray says, it shouldn't all be about raking in the cash.

I thought this novel had died - I sell hardly any - so it was wonderful to get this out of the blue yesterday:

I was not too sure in the early part if I liked it or not. Am so glad I carried on reading. What a pandora's box of secrets unfolded.

Apologies for the post subject - I can't work out how to alter it.
