What is a Kindle's life expectancy?

As my Kindle nears its first birthday (and the expiry of its guarantee) I wondered if veteran Kindle owners could suggest the usual lifespan of a Kindle? Mine has been trouble free (touches all kinds of wood), other than using the power switch to reset it on a couple of occasions. I'm hoping it doesn't magically evaporate or malfunction as the guarantee expires - who has the longest owned Kindles out there and what is the best case longevity?

I have the original K1. Her (Gertie Keddle Kindle) birthday is 8/29/08 and she's still going strong.

I've had to reset a few times using the button in the back and a couple of soft resets. The battery doesn't last as long as it used to. I purchased a new battery, but it still uses up about 1/4 of the battery capacity every time I turn on whispernet.

RE: What is a Kindle's life expectancy?

I thought I would revive this thread and the question "what is the average lifespan of a Kindle?" now that more time has elapsed and the number of Kindles in the UK has proliferated. My Kindle is, happily, still going strong after two years.Kindle Smile Have I been lucky or is this typical? Any tales of the sad demise of a cherished Kindle? whispers... I do have my eye on a Kindle Touch - but will be faithful to my original Kindle for the time being.

My 3G KK will be 2 years old on 10 September (aahh, birthday time! Wine1).

I've never had any problems with it (clasping, never mind touching) my wooden desk. I think I have only done a complete switch off once when it froze. I use it a lot and charge it at least one a week, sometimes more often.

There is very little to go wrong really. No moving parts and quite a simple configuration (well simple for some people anyway, I suspect). I expect my Kindle to last for a long time especially as I am getting free worldwide 3g, unless they switch it off. As I travel a lot, it is great to get emails wherever I am. Long live my Kindle!

Here is an excerpt from Amazon's 2011 Annual Report:

"Revenue related to 3G wireless access and delivery and software upgrades is amortized over the average life of the device, which is estimated to be three years."

Ah - three years sounds like a realistic life-expectancy. I use text-to-speech on mine a lot and wondered if this would add to wear and tear. The irony is that my daughter just told me that her less-than-a-year-old Kindle has frozen and nothing will restart it. Hopefully Amazon will replace it for her. (But she said she didn't use it much, so perhaps it died of neglect)Kindle Sad

Gulp Doesn't sound long to me. Kindle Sad

Quite apart from shelliing out for a replacement, there's the fag of reinstalling books.

I'm hoping for a lot longer than 3 years from mine. I take very good care of it and see no reason other than "planned obsolescence" for it to stop working.
Best wishes, Stephen Livingston.

RE: What is a Kindle's life expectancy?

I think it's the battery that will effect the Kindle's life-span more than anything else (barring any accidental damage of course). Those batteries are only good for so many charging cycles and also just with time they'll start to not hold a charge for as long - as Margaret Lake mentions with her old Kindle 1.
