I've got the crack too, called Amazon and they said that as it was out of warranty the best they could offer was to change it for a new one for £50 ~ I decided to live with a crack.

What I Read

RE: Hairline crack on case

I was thinking about this more realistically the other day- and I've come to the conclusion i was being paranoid over the tiny crack in the casing- looking at my mobile phone, which is only 6 months old it is in a lot worse condition, and has a few scratches and is working fine. I think i may have been a bit to hasty to judge my Kindle on a very minor cosmetic fault- I wouldn't phone Sony asking them for a replacement for my phone- so i'm going to leave it :-)

I know some people have had major faults with there kindles- so i count myself lucky that it is only a tiny crack!

Yes, but if you can (at no cost and minimal inconvenience to yourself) get a brand new Kindle replaced under their warranty policy due to the hairline cracks issue, then why wouldn't you?

I had little expectation of Amazon stepping up to replace mine, firstly because I suspected that the cracks wouldn't develop much more and secondly because I didn't even buy it from them in the first place (I bought it online from Tesco).

But I asked the question, was completely honest about the reason I was contacting them, and within 2.5 minutes of online-chat with their customer service a new one was on its way to me, and was linked to my existing account. (This was after 11 months of ownership)

So tonight, 1 year and 1 month after buying my kindle, instead of having a kindle with 2 small hairline cracks I have a kindle with no cracks, and a brand new battery, screen and switches.

RE: Hairline crack on case

Hello, I'm new to this forum and I just wanted to stop by and say thanks!

I contacted Amazon after reading this thread - my kindle is almost out of warranty and the crack that appeared a couple of weeks ago is getting bigger. I was initially offered a replacement but as my model (the keyboard wifi) is no longer made, I've just had a call to let me know that I'll be getting an upgrade to the 3G version.

Needless to say I am more than happy with that.

Though the crack may be cosmetic or not - have there been any cases of the crack developing into anything more serious? - I feel much happier leaving the warranty period with an intact kindle that will hopefully last me a few more years.

So thanks to all the posters in this thread who encouraged me that it was worth making the call to Amazon.
