RE: Hairline crack on case

Both of our Kindle Keyboards have the cracks but neither of us could be bothered to send them back and over the course of a year, they haven't got any worse at all, so unless they particularly bother you I wouldn't worry too much.

There could be something in the heat theory as both of ours have spent long periods in the sun or on the beach.

RE: Hairline crack on case

Mine has been like this for over 4months now and I only recently noticed the second one. I honestly don't care, if it doesn't bother the way the kindle works then why should I waste a device that cost some money? I don't like wasting things~

Mine also sits at a warm pool most mornings and in the conservatory all summer so the heat theory has definitely got some merit for mine too!

Your kindle seems to live a life of luxury. Lounging by the pool in the morning, lazing in the conservatory in the afternoon. Is it out for cocktails in the evening too? Wine2

Haha. It gets abused more like. It gets stuffed into the very bottom of my swim bag. I really should invest in something to keep it waterproof but the damp towel and swimsuit gets chucked on it regularly and it does nothing to it. And for the conservatory? It normal acts as a playground for hamsters when I'm not reading it.

No idea how it's still alive...

RE: Hairline crack on case

Hi

I have now had my Kindle for 18 months, I think we were among the first to get them.

Mine is a 3G version and I have a leather case with the built in light.

Mine has a hairline 'crack' I'm assuming it is a crack it looks like a silver line, very fine, but is similar to the photos shown elsewhere on tho thread. It runs from the bottom left of the screen to the endue of the case diagonally.

It hasn't got worse and I have just ignored it. The kindle is always in the case and it has never been dropped.

Personally, I don't think it is anything to worry about. It is not affecting the performance of the device and as such I have no plans to seek a replacement.

Regards

Ian

RE: Hairline crack on case

My Kindle had the same hairline cracks on both sides (worse on the right as I assume where I am right handed I use the page turner keys on this side more often)...and contacted Amazon through the live chat function and had a replacement within 3 days...fantastic service...

BUT...trying to get the original collected by Yodel (Amazon's supposed preferred courier) is a nightmare! I have been waiting 3 weeks now after numerous emails and telephone calls to Yodel but still no collection.

Phoned Amazon today and I can send back using my own courier...but have to pay - albeit Amazon will refund the costs once they have received it!

Yup ... a warranty is only what a supplier offers you as a selling attraction. With a warranty they are 'contractually' saying that if you have any problems with the product they will (within certain limitations) repair it or replace it without quibble.

In law you should expect the product to last for a reasonable amount of time based on what type of product it is and what rigors it will be put through in normal use. The warranty limit is the starting point, its up to the customer if they wish to pursue replacement/repair beyond that point. Most people don't and are fobbed off with the 'out of warranty' argument. Those that do pursue it are often surprised by a positive response by the supplier, often resulting in good down stream word of mouth publicity for the supplier (for simply meeting their legal commitments) and therefore is a 'happy customer + happy supplier' win-win.

RE: Hairline crack on case

Indeed you are honoured. I registered as a member just so I could pass on my experience re cracked screen. This is so unlike me. Anyway, to the point. I purchased my Kindle 3 November 2010 and it soon developed the hairline crack, exactly as you describe. I was not using a case (in fact I purchased one immediately after my Kindle was replaced to possibly prevent a crack appearing on my replacement). My experience with Amazon was absolutely 1st class. They sent a new Kindle out to me and told me not to return the damaged one until I had received the replacement. I even had the courier collect the damaged Kindle from my home address. I was gobsmacked at the customer service and asked why they were so accomodating. The reply was that the Kindle 3 was new and they were pushing the boat out with it because it's success was paramount. 13 months later my replacement Kindle is still going strong (now in case) with no signs of defect appearing. Now that it has achieved the desired success it would appear that they are no longer "pushing the boat out". As far as them not having received any hairline crack complaints then mine is one complaint they are not owning up to.

RE: Hairline crack on case

Just thought I would add my twopenoth to this thread. I saw this post just before I went on hols back in August and when I checked, there sure enough was the dreaded crack. My wife, daughter, son, and grandaughter all got Kindles at the same time and mine was the only one with crack. Spoke to CS on my return (albeit a couple of months after) and got a replacement in 2 days. Yodel collected my old one from my workplace on the day I specified no problems. Recently had a problem with WiFi connection and again CS very helpful in sorting the problem. Can only agree with others; Amazon CS is the tops.
