Well, they have been very helpful in the past but I'm not sure they run to counselling. Just take deep breaths!!!

RE: Hairline crack on case

Found a crack on the casing at the right hand bottom of the screen. Had the kindle since December 2010. My Kindle looked for all the world that it had been in a car crash. (2yr old grandson). I telephoned Amazon and told them about the crack and they put me through to some American guy. I told him first that the kindle was battered and that I took responsiblity for that but the crack was not of my grandsons doing before I got to the end of what I was saying he told me that he was sending me a replacement. I did not argue.

I know realise that the keys had faded. Contact Amazon in the first instance whatever your concern is, their customer service is first class.

When my 'new' replacement Kindle arrived it came only with the USB cable. I believe what I was sent was a refurbished model...May be wrong. I don't expect any problems from this but just thought it was worth mentioning.

I finally got around to contacting Amazon CS about the crack on mine. A new(er) one arrived this morning.
If it is a refurb it is in Very Good Condition.
It also has a USB cable.
I have had my Kindle a year and a day!

Amazon are one of the only companies I regularly recommend to people.
They have consistently replaced or refunded, without complaint, any problems within warranty, not just Kindle, but EVERYTHING from Rusty Stainless Steel knives! to DOA Graphics cards.
Free returns
Free delivery
Frequently cheaper than everywhere else.
Thumbs Up for Amazon.

I know this thread is old but I thought I would comment on it.

I have matching cracks on either side of the bottom of my screen. I was told it was due to the heat as I don't use a 'case' - mine is a soft kinda giant sock thing. I was also told it doesn't affect the kindle at all so I'm just leaving mine. Out of warranty anyway!

I think I would still give Amazon Customer Services a ring and complain about the cracks. I suspect they would still send you a new one as they know it's a common problem.

My daughter has a white Macbook which also suffers from a similar problem where the magnets in the lid mechanism damage the case. Apple have fitted three new cases so far and we have been assured they will continue to do so each time the fault returns even though her Applecare has now expired.
