Someone once reviewed The Troll Trap, a book about trolls, trolls and more trolls, yet she kept referring to 'the troll'.
It was otherwise a lovely review, but it did feel like she might have extrapolated a whole book from its prologue.
She then asked me to review her book, so I think I've answered my own question.
I keep being asked for swapping reviews, they'll mark my book as 5 stars if I do the same. I'd rather a lower score honest review.

RE: One Star Reviews

Review swapping is all very well (assuming you can be objective) but it's a little unfair for authors to go ahead and review another author's work and then automatically expect the same in return. Some authors read more than others, and some are read more than others.
Imagine if all J.K. Rowling's reviewers expected reciprocal reviews.

Quite rightly so. It's up to us to help the reviewing system retain what value it can, not to corrupt it. I'll happily review someone's book if they have been kind enough to review mine, and if it's on a subject that interests me, but honesty is very important I think.

I'd been trad-published for seven years before I realised my publishers had to pay to get their books on tables and into windows of book shops ("book bungs") - ever since I found that out, I tend to believe in these conspiracy theories! Also, I've just been reading an article in The Author magazine about reviewing, which claims some companies are offering authors and publishers favourable reviews for a fixed fee... this sounds a similar practice to the book bungs, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's true. But I do think in the long term reviews balance out, as more people read the book and leave genuine ones.

It's a whole industry. This many reviews for that much, favourable for you, unfavourable for the competition, and so on. One of those leeches sneaked into KUF a few weeks ago, trying to sell his wares, but he was quickly discovered and booted out. It's all very depressing, except that I doubt that a dozen glowing five star reviews will sell many copies. I've written this before, but I don't think reviews, good or bad, sell many copies full stop, unless they stand out in some way. Over time, in my opinion, word-of-mouth is the only way to sell significant numbers as an indie.

What I Read

RE: One Star Reviews

I have been asked several times before to have a review exchange with an author. I refused each time because it cannot be unbiased. If you are scored five stars, you feel obliged to score highly back. It just doesn't work. I hate feeling under pressure to give particular scores to books.

I read what I am fairly certain I will enjoy and I am very rarely disappointed. (Thanks to reviewers like Ignite who filter out the dross!!).
I don't score fellow authors below 3. In those cases where I feel I can't score three or more, I simply don't leave a review. People may question this but I'm not going to score highly falsely and I'm certainly not going to open myself up to a reprisal review. Does the fact that I don't score lower than 3 make my reviews any less valid? I hope not, as if I've reviewed something, the score will be genuine. No point in being dishonest. It does no one any favours in the long run. It's just a shame I feel I can't score lower than a 3 in public. The fact is I don't trust others not to be honest in return. So, anything I dislike will simply not get a mention. But, as I'm very choosy with what I read in the first place, it's very very rare that I don't like what I read.

RE: One Star Reviews

I noticed someone trying to sell reviews on KUF. I was annoyed because I drafted a witty response but the thread got pulled before I could post it.

Sadly, I expect you'll get another chance to post your response.

There are so many authors who work hard to earn genuine reviews. The selling and trading of reviews annoys the hell out of me.

RE: One Star Reviews

I have posted the odd sub-3* review, but not for any book written by an author I know/have corresponded with. As Jonathan says, I couldn't bring myself to do it. I have been known to get in touch with the author privately if I feel I have any constructive advice to give.
