What I Read

RE: One Star Reviews

It's hard to laugh or shrug it off, Mads, but I've learned that spiteful reviews have little or no effect on sales, especially when the criticism is in no way constructive or insightful.

I was gutted for an entire day when I got my first one star and I still sink a little with every less than favourable rating but -- onward and upward Wink

Thanks for your support. I guess bad reviews are better than no reviews.

I recently had my first one-star review, Mads, and I won't lie...it hurt! No matter how many good ones you get, a bad one always lingers in the mind. However, as long as it is an anomaly, and from what I have heard so far about your book, it certainly seems to be, then I don't think there's any need to worry! Smile

RE: One Star Reviews

All my one-star reviews seem to come on a bloody Saturday morning, just in time to ruin my weekend Smile My 'favourite' was my first ever:

"I read at least , sometimes more, 2 books per month on my Kindle and never have I stopped reading a book before the end of the first chapter!!!Well the ones the first This book is abslolutely dire, it jumps everywhere in the first 4 pages, I don't know if I'm in Scotland, Hong Kong..... etc. Will certainly watch out for this author again and click delete!!!"

The last sentence still makes me smile, for its nonsensical attempt at a cutting remark - what exactly is he going to delete?? Anyway, the reason for his confusion was the fact that one of the characters in my book is Korean, but it's set in the UK. See why that one was a puzzler.

Ha, c'mon mate, put down the deletion phaser!

Strikes me as odd that most one-star reviews that indie authors get are A) the only review - and indeed only activity - from that particular disgruntled user, and B) so vague that they could be about anything. Seen a fair few that aren't 'verified purchase' too. I once read a 'how to sell a gajillion books every day' effort that suggested some people might leave one-star reviews for so-called competitors' novels, and that got me wondering if it actually happens. Can't think of anything more despicable than sabotaging another person's hard work like that, and I really hope that no one would stoop so low, for what surely must be zero gain?

RE: One Star Reviews

I think often the 'unverified' ones are based on the 'Look Inside' feature or the sample - which is no way to review.

RE: One Star Reviews

But is it fair to post a public review if you didn't read more than a few pages either?

I blogged about crime fiction for a couple of years, and on my own blog I also mentioned books I hadn't been able to finish - and why. But I often explained that this or that book might appeal to thriller fans etc. I also made allowances for debuts because we all know that some writers show potential, but their first book is rarely brilliant.

What I Read

RE: One Star Reviews

We all put so much into our books that it's very hard not to feel an emotional response to reviews, good or bad.
When someone attacks our work and posts their comments on the internet for the whole world to see, then it has to hurt. But what actually matters are the sales, not the reviews - and I've come to believe that most book reviews on Amazon have absolutely no effect on sales. Purchasers/readers have got wise to how the system works.
Looking at your reviews, Mads, I'd bet that the only one that will have any effect is Ignite's. The other positive ones have been posted by people who haven't reviewed any other books and, whether it's true or not, they will be dismissed as coming from friends/supporters. The one star poster will also be ignored.
Don't worry about it. Keep plugging away. Get the book mentioned wherever you can  - and write some more good books as that is what will make you successful.
