What I Read

RE: One Star Reviews

I think I read somewhere that certain people use reviews in one of these places to communicate with each other about completely different things so maybe that's what your example is, Robert. I don't know how they do it or why, maybe someone else has also heard of it?
I don't look at reviews of my perma-free book any more but I have some weird star ratings for the others that don't actually match the text of the review - maybe some people not used to the star ratings system?

What I Read

RE: One Star Reviews

I was quietly licking my wounds about a recent 2* star review when I decided to check out her other reviews. Turns out the reviewer rates most books 1* and even wrote a review for a Brenda Novak book saying - "1* - Where is the negative star button?' Her title lines say things like 'Impossible to finish' or 'Plot, what plot?'
She commented for my book " Show's promise but...blah blah blah...." but I'm feeling much more chirpy for knowing she was able to finish the book and give it a whole 2 stars - OH, and PHEW - apparently my writing doesn't merit her reading more of my work -WELL THANK GOODNESS FOR SMALL MERCIES!

RE: One Star Reviews

Poor Grace
This sounds like the same idiot I got on Amazon UK
She started by saying....I never give 1 star reviews.....I looked through her profile and she gave out nearly all 1 star reviews
I wouldn't mind if she actually read the book. I know for a fact that she didn't, as this book has never sold in the UK. Possibly due to the fact it has a 1 star review.
Pinch of salt and a chuckle

RE: One Star Reviews

I've had a few really bad 1 stars in my tenure, but this one was probably the worst.

This review is from: A killer Boxset (A heart pounding boxset of thrillers!) (Kindle Edition)
I managed to get to chapter 58 of "The Casual Killer" - I am not usually so tolerant - but I must have been feeling very generous. If this book has been "professionally edited" and "proofread" then I would suggest to the Author that many of the 10-year olds I used to teach could have done a better job! There are so many errors of spelling, grammar and syntax that if I was to list them, then this review would be longer than the actual book! I do appreciate that the cost was only £0.99 - but I feel that even that was a waste of money! How anyone can misspell "skull" as "scull" beggars belief - 3 times in 2 kindle pages! The plot was puerile (childish) and the characters were cardboard stereotypes of "hard, violent psychos" - and those were just the cops! For 99p I don't expect a work of great literature - but is a reasonably well-constructed story beyond the realms of expectation? This author is definitely one that I will be avoiding - remember the name - LUIS SAMWAYS - don't touch it with a very long barge-pole. If there was a Prize for AVOID AT ALL COSTS literature - then you would win First Prize, Luis!

It's all part of the game though, cant all be winners! Tongue

I've read that and agree completely Tongue hehe Only joking. There's no need for people to be so nasty. Maybe it's just me, even if I thought something was 1 star I wouldn't tear an author to pieces. Actually, if I read something that bad I wouldn't even bother reviewing it. However, I have NEVER read anything I'd consider one star, except maybe Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which may be controversial, but I found it utter tripe. Again, I just didn't bother reviewing it. I'm not somebody who would review bad. I only review if I feel it merits it. Reading a good book/short story makes me want to go online and write a nice review. A bad book, I want to forget and I want to pick up something good straight away.

That's me though, we're all different Smile

One star reviews suck but what you gonna do if somebody hates the book that much they want everybody to know about it! It's their right though, they paid their money, and I guess their opinion is important, although calling author's out isn't needed and does nothing but hurt people's feelings. I suppose giving the circumstances, it is a small price we pay for the privilege of writing and releasing work.

What I Read

RE: One Star Reviews

Hello there,

I am not sure if this has already been said - this is a huge thread! - but don't forget that there are tons (thousands?, millions?) of Kindle readers out there! I am not sure anyone could write a book that 100% of a user base that big would all love. I mean that's what we hope, but it's just never going to happen Smile

As for all those rude reviews that I have been reading, and I am sure I get this attitude from having used to work in retail for years, but if someone is being rude it always has to do with THEM and not you. I doubt any of these people would actually say those 'critiques' to anyone in person- but with the anonymity of the internet you are always going to have more people that are going to have no issue being offensive. Ce La Vie.
