Martyrs - Truly disturbing horror classic on LoveFilm Instant

I've been watching Horror films since I was barely out of nappies (my mum used to work in the Odeon back in the 70s and would sneak me and my dad in quite often) and I'd consider myself to have a pretty strong stomach, so when I saw initial comments on this French horror film from 2008 that I'd somehow missed, I just had to fire up the projector and take a look for myself.

The film starts off looking quite predictable, being the story of two girls, one of whom had suffered abuse in her childhood and is now exacting a just revenge. Right from the outset, there is a high level of gore and realistic violence but nothing particularly ground-breaking. Around half way through the story begins to open up and things take some very unexpected turns and now, on top of even more explosive violence come the far more unsettling psychological aspects.
It's hard to explain in any great detail without ruining one of the best horror films of all time. Just when you think things can't get any more disturbing the director unleashes another assault on your sensibilities. By the end of the film, you are nothing short of speechless, left with the images and enigmatic ending playing out in your head for days after as you try to comprehend the true meaning.

I can't recommend this film for anyone but the most hardened horror fan, but if you can manage to take everything in whilst keeping everything down and make it to the end with your sanity intact, you won't regret a moment of it.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Film is available on LoveFilm Instant HD in French with English subtitles. http://www.lovefilm.com/film/Martyrs-Blu-ray/127069/

Absolute cracker of a flick - disturbing, bloody, higher concept than you'd initially think. I'd certainly agree with the recommendation.
