Preflight check of pdf without Adobe Acrobat Pro; & British Library

How do other writers preflight check their pdf files before sending to the printers for paperback, if they do not have Adobe Acrobat Pro? I have the standard version which does not have preflight.

Also, I noted in a previous thread (cannot currently locate it) that some people said they did not assign a new ISBN number to a revised paperback because Amazon does not remove the old one, and this plus having to start the ranking process from the beginning again can cause problems. Do you then lodge the revised copy with the British Library? And have they had anything to say about you not assigning it a new ISBN?

Thank you.

I have to admit to getting someone to do all the PDF for me, a couple of us then go through it again and again. Final tweaks made, checked again then hope that no one missed a glaring error!

The reason why a physical proof is so invaluable before the final printing.

Re ISBNs, I believe that any reasonable amount of changes needs a new one, a change of price doesn't but a change of title most certainly does.

Here is a link to a good FAQ on ISBNs ISBN FAQ

Hope it helps.

Edit - corrected the link as per George's comment below. Hope it works now.

Thanks, TresaC.

I've already created the PDF, and I am able to check a couple of the items with the version of Adobe Acrobat X Standard on my current computer, but there are a couple of checks that need the Pro version of Adobe or some other Perflight software. I avoid having to proof the entire PDF again by doing it myself from the Word file which I have already checked (I haven't had any problems in the past). If I gave it out to someone else to do, then I would not feel happy without proofing the PDF as well. I'll have to dig out an old computer from storage, as I think it has a bit of software that I can use.

Re ISBN's, the only changes are Ally's proofing edits, and material about other books at the back. I did use a new ISBN when I moved the paperback from CreateSpace to LSI, but If I do it again, Amazon will display all 3 versions, which I want to avoid. For that reason I'll assume the changes are not substantial enough to require a new ISBN.

Your link to the FAQ has one too many http://

Hi George,

I have edited the link, hope it is okay now. I would imagine that if the changes are mainly proofing ones rather than major editorial changes, it would be acceptable as not being substantial changes. I agree, three listings are not going to help you or the reader.

I tend to think that it is one of those areas where common sense prevails!
