Amazon.com introduce Amazon Coins

Certainly quite a bizarre choice of name - sounds like the new legal tender for the Republic of Amazon, but actually it relates to a new system of virtual currency which can be used for Kindle Fire app purchases and in-app items.

Launching in the US only (for the time being), the idea is to both facilitate easy in-app purchasing and also to allow parents to allocate a number of coins to children rather than letting them lose with their 1-click payments or credit card.

It's good news for developers as anything which eases the process of in-app purchases is sure to increase revenue, although so many games now have hidden charges you do have to wonder when people will say enough is enough.

For the customer, Amazon.com have pledged to give away tens of millions of dollars worth of coins to celebrate the launch in May. Lucky old US customers Sad

Amazon launches its own virtual currency: I just spotted this article about Amazon Coins and had to check that the date wasn't April 1st. I like the comment which suggests it will probably be a better currency than the Euro.

(Maybe this is how they will pay authors in the future.Undecided)
