Kindle Fire as Picture Viewer ???

Slightly odd question this - sorry folks. I don't own a Kindle Fire but my sister in law got one for Christmas. I managed to handle it for about 5 minutes a few days back. Very nice it seemed too! So bear in mind both my lack of experience and even more s-i-l's utter lack of technical ability, particularly including reading user manuals. Her daughter who gave it to her provided a brief intro to email, FB and reading books and has left her to it!

There is a family gathering on Sunday coming and I wondered if the Fire could be used as a bog-standard picture viewer to show off various family pics of 2012 to those we don't see very often. Can I just bung in a usb stick and navigate to it via picture viewer or some such - or do I have to actually transfer the pics to the onboard memory? Either way a quick indication of how to do so would be much appreciated. OH wants me to print the said pics - how 20th century and with me being a Photoshop obsessive would take me ages! And the prints would probably be binned not long after. So assistance very much needed.

RE: Kindle Fire as Picture Viewer ???

I have not had a Kindle Fire HD for long but it does work well as a picture viewer for just the sort of occasions you describe. Unfortunately it does not have a USB socket for a stick but the pictures can easily be transferred from a computer using the cable that comes with the KF. Just save them to the folder on the KF called 'Pictures' and they can be in a subdirectory with an appropriate name.

Then to view them just select Photos from the home screen and then the subdirectory. You just scroll through them by swiping and you can make them fit the screen by rotating the KK to match the format. The size you get is about 6 by 4 inches so similar to a print.

Hope that helps

Thanks Jim

Speedy and spot-on! A problem then if the Fire doesn't have a usb socket as the Fire is not in my possession. Not sure what plan B would be then but very probably not the Kindle! Huh

Edit: Thought of emailing them to her can she then save the pics from the email as viewing not in her home. Is that possible from the Fire though doubt she would be able to do this without me present.

You could use an online storage such as box or dropbox, then when you are there access them and pop them on the fire.
Would the fire be able to access them straight from dropbox?

I don't have a fire, so am just guessing work arounds.

Or you could put your photos in the amazon cloud and if you are showing them off somewhere where there is free wifi, access them through that.

Thanks Joo and Elaine. Dropbox and Flickr occurred to me as well after posting last time - but meeting in a very traditional Cheshire pub (Netherton Hall, Frodsham) - slightly posh and modernity not entirely obvious so not sure about the wifi, but will check. Hang on - not only do I discover that it's in the Good Pub Guide but after a bit of digging find the site for the pub and Freeeeeee Wiiiiiiifiiiiiiii Yaye !!!

So all I need to do is find out more about cloud storage and the rest should be easy. Unless you hear more from me here of course! Should look pretty impressive on the day. Cool

Mille Grazie (as Jamie Oliver always says) guys!! Thumbs Up
